When it senses an object it will connect the output to the positive supply.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;If you&amp;rsquo;re unsure of which output type you need, a number of manufactures produce sensors with configurable outputs.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt; In this case the sensor can be configured to operate as an NPN or PNP type.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;NPN, PNP, and Configurable type sensors come in a Normally Closed and Normally Open configurations.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;!-- [DocumentBodyEnd:e0b22a99-17c4-4359-b5a6-20c2df420275] --&gt;</description>

This limits suitable targets to metal objects (for the most part). In order to be sensed by a capacitive sensor the target doesn&amp;rsquo;t need to be conductive. A capacitive sensor will react to an object acting as a dielectric material as well as a conductive object.
