Researchers at an  Italian university have announced the successful prototyping of a  contact lens  with embedded camera, communications and power. The prototype uses  advanced  transparent plastic CMOS technology to enable the integration without  disturbing  normal vision from the viewer.

The prototype uses  CMOS image sensors to take a high resolution 3D image, the wireless  transmitter  is then used to broadcast the signal to either a central unit, or  directly via a  line of site point-to-point connection. A thermovoltaic  energy-scavenging device  uses heat from the wearer’s eyelid to power the unit, so no batteries or  mains  are required for the whole operation.

Professor Poisson  from the Engineering dept of the University Premiere de la Pril,  Bologna, which developed  the lens says, “The prototype is rather bulky for anything but  specialist use,  but we hope to be able to integrate all the equipment into normal pair  of  contact lenses. If the scale of electronics miniaturization continues at  its  current pace, a full production model could be available in as little  as 6 months”.

The research has been  sponsored by the several governments, who are  believed to  want the lenses to become mandatory to cut down on crime and fraud.
