BANGALORE, INDIA: Moe Win, an Associate Professor, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, MIT, gets into a conversation with Pradeep Chakraborty, where he discusses location awareness, as well as some other projects he and his team are working on. Excerpts:
You presented on location awareness. Elaborate your interest in the area.
Moe Win: Location awareness is going to be everywhere. A lot of applications made on top of the wireless networks will have location awareness. You can easily enable location awareness on a wireless network. May I add that I came to India too late/ I am very optimistic about India,
Do you think Indai can contribute to location awareness?
Moe Win: I think that this is more of a global phenomena, rather than Indian, But certainly, there is no doubt that Indian research will also contribute to this field.
You depicted the use of algorithm. Would you elaborate on that aspect?
Moe Win: My algorithms mainly exploit the idea of helping out each other better. Our approach is to not rely on the infrastructure. Our algorithms rely on the other users around you -- or your friends. We have filed for patents a couple of years ago to the Technology Licensing Office (TLO). We will be very happy to sell the patents to companies later.
What are the other areas that you are working on?
Moe Win: Yes, I am working on ultrawide band (UWB) technology. We are looking at UMB for positioning and communications, simultaneously. We are looking at the co-operative network, distributed processing and algorithms. We are also trying to understand secrecy issues in wireless networks.
What else are you interested in?
Moe Win: I am also interested in network science. It basically deals with how to work with networks. The first networks that I see are going to be wireless networks.
Most of everything that we do are based on very solid and inter-disciplinary mathematical ideas. We do practical algorithm design and implementation.
I myself work very closely with collaborators and students. I am also very close to my students.
