Load Google Translate Hi,
I see that i have collected more than 300 points and became an expert. But i don't see myself as an expert. So, there is a wrong relation between the points earned and being an expert. Namely, if i am a newly joined member and send 100 messages just containing the message "Hi people, have anice day!" or reply a message by writing simply "i agree" then i will become an expert. Thus, there must be a strict difference between the users and experts.
In my opinion, points should be given to the users' messages if found valuable by the other users and sending a message should not be counted as a point.
What are your thought about this issue ?
Firat
I agree, sorry could not resist that.
yes you are correct, but this is common to a lot of the technical forums.
Hi Firat,
Yes ofcourse you are an expert. Don't beat yourself to hard over this...
So, this post will add a few points to my account ;-)
Best regards, Enrico Migchels
Hi Enrico,
Thanks for the kind words but really i don't feel that i am an expert. Is being an expert so easy ? ![]()
And i earned 3 points more now ![]()
Best regards,
Firat
Hi Firat,
Yes it is.
There is a saying about this:
''in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king'' (read: expert)
Best regards, Enrico Migchels
Hi Enrcio,
Thank you very much. It is really a good saying ![]()
Best regards,
Firat
Hi Firat,
'Ask the Expert' is separate from the small badges you earn from posting content/answering questions.
Many of our 'Ask the Experts' are nominated by our manufacturers, however some experts are retired workers who are interested in giving back helping the next generation of electronics engineers. Our 'Ask the Experts' are featured on the Expert landing page and then placed into a queue where they can be selected from the queue for a 2 week feature on the home page. If you have an expert you would like to nominate (You can nominate yourself if you'd like to be an element14 'Ask the Expert') please send an email to communitymanager@premierfarnell.com with the following information:
Expectations of Experts:
Here are a few things we’d like you to know before you start your expert stint on element14.
Hi Nicole,
Thank you very much for the valuable information. Yes, i know about your point. The Expert section is different from users' state obtained by earned points. For your point, i am far away of it. At least, i see myself like that.
Thank you very much, again.
Best regards,
Firat
Just popped back in here to rid myself of a message from 'jenafir' who had something 'really important' to tell me.
This is an interesting question. Do you realize how many sites on the web are trying to be 'communities' and trying to rig up various artificial methods to force/lure/entice people to post messages. Just like you've discovered, the title of 'expert' is just a method to get you to post and doesn't say anything about the content. (Ka-ching, 3 points!). There are other places that let web users answer questions, then vote on the best answer. That doesn't always work either.
I'm at a company where they advertise over 35 years of experience in that technology. I've been here 7 years. I'm the expert. Originally by default, but I'm learning.....
Steve
Hi Stephen,
Two items in your message caught my attention.
First is regarding the unwanted message from "jenafir" - if you receive unwanted/inappropriate private messages from another member, please report it via this support/feedback area, or by sending an email to communitymanager@premierfarnell.com and we will deal with the user who is misusing the site.
Second, the status of "expert" or any of the status levels on the site are not intended as a gimick to get users to post. It is our way of helping to identify members on the site who are most active and whose information is most valuable/credible to other members. You do get some points just for posting, but you get more points if you have answered a question for another user and it is marked as correct. The idea is that you would be able to tell by looking at the status rating of another member how reliable their comments or posted content is. It is also a nice way to recognize our most active members, but it's not a status we give out - it is earned by your actions.
Sincerely,
Christy Zurcher

As for the 'jenafir' business, you should have received a forwarded email days ago.
Then for the 'expert' designation, how, then, does one differentiate between the true expert and the one who posts a lot of messages? It seems to me that both would get the expert designation and probably have the same point levels. So basically you've reiterated the exact original complaint. He didn't feel he was an expert but, as you say, he was 'rewarded' for being active by achieving the title 'expert'. So we've come entirely in a circle. ;-)
Hi Stephen,
I did get the forwarded message but for the benefit of others who may have had the same issue, I posted a response to your comment.
Regarding the expert designation - official experts on the site receive this icon as a designation under their name anywhere they post and on their profile.
The status level that Firat referred to (which as mentioned are rewarded based both on activity and on how other users rate your content and indicate that your answers/comments are useful and helpful) is designated below:
As a community, we are always interested your thoughts on how things should work. If you think it is confusing or to have a status level of Expert, we are happy to change it. In fact, we'd be happy for you all to give your thoughts on what status level verbiage you might perfer. Currently the levels are:
Newbie, Novice, Apprentice, Expert, and Master. Each level is successively harder to reach.
If those of you in the commmunity have any thoughts on levels that you would prefer or what amount of points would be appropriate for each, and in fact what activities on the site you think should impact those levels, we welcome your input.
Sincerely,
Christy
