Site Performance

Christy

I don't know if it is my oldish PC but the site seems to be a bit sluggish?

Also when you edit your profile any CRLF's you put in get removed and the details come out on 'long lines'

Some of the email option on preferences are confusing - not quite sure what they are going to do for me.

It would be great if there were little help buttons or something to explain at the point of use? e.g. how to upload an Avatar

Re: Feedback - How are we doing?

    Hi Pete,

Thanks so much for your feedback. I have observed the sight is a bit sluggish today myself, so we'll take a look at the server performance.

I'll take a look into the other areas as well - the lack of line breaks in profile fields, the email options, and adding some additional context sensitive help in key areas.

    Re: Site Performance

The site is still sluggish. That's because it sends big loads of data. I have browsed just a little through private messages, and stuff... And I received already over 2MB of traffic.

Formatting of personal profile would be nice indeed. All CRLF are stripped now.

    Re: Site Performance

We have made a number of improvements to the site code to reduce the amount of data being sent, allow images and data to be downloaded simultaneously and to move as many of the static components of the site as possible to servers around the world to make the site load as quickly as possible.

We would like to hear from our users about how element14 is working for you. We welcome any details you want to pass along but in particular we'd like to know where you are in the world, what part of the site you were on, and approximately how many seconds it takes the page to load.

Thanks for helping us to make element14 work even better by sharing your experiences with us.

    Sincerely,

    Not improved

Routing data through different locaitons will not help.

The amount of data is still the same. Since last year it even increased.

    No improvement.

The only relief is the "quick reply" box, which comes in a thread. It loads quicker. But after a message is posted, only the "advanced editor" comes, and it is slow.

    • Creating a new private message.
    • Creating an advanced editor in a public thread.
    • Posting, and loading a page afterwards.

All take about 430-480kB. - Each time, each page, keep reloading the same 480kB.

Seems like the same 2MB per few pages, like I recall it being before. The total time is the same, or even slower. No reduction of data, or time.

The content of any page is big enough to justify 10kB. That's what it should be. - About 50 times less than you send now.

    Improved suddenly

Now it takes about 30-48kB per any page.

Has somebody read my complaint, and improved the system promptly now? Why did it take a complaint to achieve that? Why not do it earlier, on your own?

It is still not the desired 10kB, though. Work harder!

    Re: Improved suddenly

    Hi Andrew,

We are working to improve the site performance all the time. We've been working to reduce the "overhead" of the page size and I think it may have been a caching issue for you as we made quite a lot of changes awhile ago that don't seem to have gotten to you.

I'm glad to hear it is better for you now.

    Sincerely,

    Christy

    Improvement was temporary

Today it is back to 430 kB per page.

Seems like the sudden improvement was due to some caching, or maybe it was temporary due to some works, which you made.

Though caching is unlikely to have been at play, because usually any page of yours loads all data anew, even when loading the same content.

The amount of data 430...480 kB is by network traffic.

The size of page itself is usually 23...28kB.
