During a ceremony held to commemorate delivery of the first Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric cars to customers, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said today the company will hire 1,000 additional engineers and researchers in the Detroit area as it develops the next generation of EV technology.
The new engineers and researchers will work on battery technology, electric motors and power controls for electric cars, gas-electric hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, the company said. The technology jobs are the first major additions to GM's U.S. salaried ranks since the company emerged from bankruptcy protection last year, according to a GM spokesman.
