Load Google Translate Hello,
I'm on the lookout for a UK-based company that offers PCB fabrication in low volumes (rarely more than 5 per batch in my case, and usually only 1 or 2). My group tend to use PCBTrain, but they seem rather expensive for such small quantities. Has anyone had experience with any particular companies that they can report on?
My requirements are fairly simple: a single point of call for fab and assembly, one or two layers (never more), plated through vias, surface mount parts but no BGA and such like, silk screen would definitely be preferred but I can live without if the price is good enough.
Thank you
Not strictly UK based, but there are a few companies discussed at http://www.element-14.com/community/message/14589 and a bit of discussion on why it is so expensive for the amounts you want. The other options are the get a few others to order with you (Needs you to join all the boards into one and cut them up later) or make them yourself (http://www.element-14.com/community/message/8046)
Let us know if you find anywhere else!

From that other thread, PCB Pool look quite interesting, the price calculator is easier than most I've seen at least. I have been tempted by home fabrication for a while now, but the learning curve seems rather steep (and expensive). My main problem would be drilling though, I don't really have anything suitable for doing that.
Kemp,
If you are planning on making single layer boards, you might want to consider obtaining, by any means, a CNC mill to etch your own boards.
Some interesting materials you could toy with called Pyralux and Kapton made by Dupont lets you make paper thin flexible circuits. The pictures below is of a single layer circuit examples:
An Arduino based Dev board on Kapton.
A simple header with LEDs on Kapton.

Kemp,
Look this: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Flexible-Printed-Circuits/
And learn how to fab at home using a solid-ink printer.
Pyralux sheets turn up on eBay.
The seeeduino flex-based arduino clone is NOT single sided; it has top and bottom track layers.
I have a CNC router for PCBs, and it's a bit iffy for modern fine-pitch circuits, even in single-sided modes. The absolute spec on this beast (an LPKF) is something like 0.2mm tracks between 0.2mm spaces, if you have everything set up just perfecct, so 0.5mm pitch TQFP type things are on the very edges of possible (no soldermask without additionak effort)
You can buy an awful lot of group-purchase professionally made boards (ala Dorkboard, or Sparkfun, or etc) for the $5-$10k the mill will cost you.
I've uses panel sharing prototypes through ALR before and they have been good. I have also been looking at possibly getting prototypes from Europe or China, but so far have not tried any of the myriad companies that are on the net. I'd also like to be able to prototype some 0.8mm thick double sided PCB's.
Did you get any further with finding a supplier?
I have used only chinnese pcb makers. Itead Studio are really cheap $12 for 10 boards of 5cmx5cm. The quality is ok. The bad side is that the shipping is awfully slow. My last board took almost a month to arrive from china.
