Load Google Translate Following up on recent Element-14 posts, commenting on the proposed recast of the WEEE directive and the conflicting opinions of the European Parliament and the European Council, it seems there may be some progress.
There are conflicting opinions on the percentage of electrical waste that should be recycled each year. There has been wide advocation for an ambitious collection requirement based on the amount of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) a producer puts on the market annually, instead of the amount collected as WEEE. Whilst the former would represent a significant improvement on the volume of electronic waste recycled, its implementation is not seen as pragmatic.
It has been suggested that the recast could include a recycling calculation method that would incorporate both WEEE collected and EEE put on the market. This would allow for an improvement to recycling performance whilst maintaining reliability and keeping the change in administration required by the WEEE recast to a minimum. It also allows recycling schemes to more securely project any necessary increase in capacity.
