Eco Design Directive: expected changes in 2012

The European Commission (EC) has announced that a Consultation Forum on the draft Eco Design working plan and the new Methodology (MEErP) will be taking place on the 20th January next year.

The meeting will focus on the working plan for the period 2012 -2014, and include a review of the methodology used in reference to articles 16 and 21 of the existing directive. Findings will be based on an EC study which has been taking place during the past year. The working plan is also expected to address increasing calls for guidance and clarity in producing a method for uniform implementation of regulation.

Methodologies are being reviewed to enhance competitiveness in industry. Arguments have been presented to weight the directive to favour the more ambitious of industries to enhance innovation and keep jobs within the EU.

Expected outcomes of the forum will be finalised product group specific regulations. Between 2008 and 2011, 12 Eco Design regulations, with another two amendments, have already entered force. Another five energy labelling regulations are also currently in force.

2012 is expected to be a big year for the Eco Design Directive with three regulations and another four energy labelling regulations due to be implemented. The adoption of the revised Eco Design Directive is due by March 2012.
