Laptops want to destroy you!

I noticed this smart ergonomic advise on Google+ today:

The animated GIF drives the point home quickly:

I figured I would post this as I can imagine many folks in our community here probably get obsessed with the problem at hand and forget about ergonomics.  I definately take this message to heart as I put serious strain on my back, neck and wrists by my mid-20s by using laptops poorly.  A few small changes back then would saved me a lot of discomfort now.

Cheers,

Drew

    Hi Drew, Great post.

It is amazing how much a little good posture will do to improve your life.  I take great pride in having used keyboards for over 40 years without any carpal tunnel issues.  My secret, I took a typing class on manual typewriters in High School.  Our teacher as a huge stickler for correct posture when typing.  Over the years, I have seen hundreds of people suffer or become disabled because they did not use the simple basic posture for keyboarding.  It is so easy to fix and you get good benefits immediately.

The correct posture is also important when reading or watching a laptop, as your Gif demonstrates.  As someone with a severe neck injury I can tell you for a fact, you do not know what pain is until you injure your neck.  First signs of bad posture will be a numbness in your hands or fingers.  Go see a specialist immediately.  If treated early, you can save yourself a lifetime of pain and suffering.

If just bruised, your nerves will regrow at about a mm per week.  If they are damaged, they don't heal at all.  I can personally vouch for the downside of permanent nerve damage.  A little thing like a nerve can reduce your physical activities by as much as 90%, which is where I found myself after my accident.

So sit up right, get rid of the swivel chair, and get yourself a good chair to do your computing.  You will not regret the change.  If you ignore this advice, then you will suffer for the rest of your life.  Think about it.
