Load Google Translate I'm trying to build a compact iPod speaker, similar to http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Lego-iPod-Speaker-for-less-than-2-/. I need it to be loud enough to be able to hear spoken words in a restaurant, so I'm thinking it needs to put out about 90-100dB. So I'm looking for small (<20mm diameter) speakers with good sound output in the 80-250Hz range. mouser.com has a dizzying array of options. I'm wondering if anyone here has a recommendation.
You need a small hardcone speaker with good powerrating and more imortant is good mounting in a seald rugged resonans box. Use hardcone speakers with round cone - they are much easier to make work well than the recatangular onece. i guess that a volyme of 25-30 cm3 would be minumum volume - prefebly use 50-100 cc3
Chrispix,
Bengt is giving you good guidance on a transducer. If you need to get phenomenal bass out of a tiny enclosure, MaxxBass is the way to go. http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=327
If you want a quick and dirty solution, I suggest you find a used LCD monitor with speakers and use the ones inside. They may be sufficient for your needs and you can usually find people litterally throwing these things away.
Just a thought,
DAB
Bengt, thanks for the tips. This definitely helps me in the right direction.
DAB, good idea. Hadn't thought of that.
you can also try recordble gretting cards
On a similar topic i need a small speaker to driven by the heaphone output on a PC motherboard (in an enclosure) to make a loud warning beep I tried a small speaker but it was not loud enough and not as loud as the headphoen we tried can anyone reocmend one ideally from Farnell stocks.
Chris,
Feel free to contact me for a wide range of miniature speakers, from under 1" to 4" - rectangular and round.

Davin
That is a cramped space for major output.
Have you tried the element14 store? See these results
Would 500mW work? Try the Star Microtronics SAE-20A Star Microtronics SAE-20A

if it`s just a Beep you want, you`re probably better off with a peizo sounder that has it`s own resonant enclosure, you will need to drive this with a small step-up transformer to get it loud.
the small audio transformers that are 2000 Ohm one side and 8 Ohm on the other are great for this.
the 2K side goes to the Peizo and the 8 Ohm side to your 3.5mm earphone jack.
hope that helps ![]()
