How to invite people to join group?

Hi,

I want to invite a registered user to join a group.

When I use the action "Invite people to join this group" and then search for the user with the "Find Users" link, the user cannot be found.

When I search for the same user with the search bar (always towards the top of the page, next to "Home", "My Element" and "Solutions") they can be found.

Please help.

I had this problem before. I think it is because people have both a name and a username and you can search both, but only invite or email using one. For instance you can search for me using awinning or alistair winning, but only invite or privatate message awinning (I think the find user option works the same way). If you try with Alistair Winning it says person not found

Seems we have a problem.

For example: User VIV NEWHOUSE:
search for "Newhouse" - nothing
search for "Viv" - nothing
search for "Viv Newhouse" - nothing

Yet when I type viv into the search bar at the top of the page it starts to suggest things - one of the suggestions is VIV NEWHOUSE, which leads to her profile page, but I cannot invite her from here.

Thanks Marcus - but your pic doesn't help much.
Try hitting enter after typing Viv Newhouse into the search bar.
Try inviting her to WTSWTS.

I've invited her

As I said in my earlier post its a bit of a quirk

Here is a workaround. I searched for viv newhouse, and found here. Then I chose send private message which showed vnewhouse in the "to" line. Then went to the group you were taking about and sent invitation to vnewhouse, and apparantly its worked

Hi Alistair,

I thought I'd invited her too! I sit next to her and to-date she hasn't received any invitation.

Don't want to sound negative - but will our customers be bothered with workarounds?

Hi Joe,

Not sure why, but when I tried this using find users, VIV Newhouse was top of the list.

However, I get some pretty strange results when I try using wildcards (* or ?), even though searching for users I know.

Thanks, but once again....
I tried vnewhouse@farnell.com both in the search bar and the find user section when I try to invite her but NOTHING comes up...

Let's go back to my first question - How do I invite Viv to the Group WTSWTS?

Just further to this, we have had a poke around and are nearly at the conclusion that if you are not a group moderator/owner, you cannot invite people to private groups. We think your people search in the invites section of the group is only turning up existing members. We will try escalate this problem

Hi,

I think I may have the answer to this.

It would appear that the system excludes from the search results any user who is either
a) Already a member of the group
or
b) Has an outstanding invite.

So I suspect that the user you were trying to invite had already been sent an invite previously.

Unfortunately I don't know of a way to easily check this, though the group moderators can check if there is any outstanding invites via the "Manage Group Members" action.

Hi everyone.

We resolved this. Viv needed assistance to log in, accept requests etc.

Despite Viv's difficulties, some issues have come out of this:

1. Why does Viv not appear when we search for her name in the "Find Users" section?
2. Why do users on other machines get completely different results from the same search string?
2. When you search for people using the search bar at the top of each page and hit enter, it's very confusing when the first thing you see says that nothing has been found. In fact - the people results are well down the page, out of view!

If anyone needs me to demonstrate the above, just get in touch.

Thanks everyone for your help, particularly Alistair Winning who took the time out to call me and discuss.
