Load Google Translate This morning Google announced that it is planning to build and test “ultra high-speed” broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. The company’s 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections could deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today. Google said it will offer service at “a competitive price” to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
According to Google, “Network providers are making real progress to expand and improve high-speed Internet access, but there's still more to be done. We don't think we have all the answers – but through our trial, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the shared goal of delivering faster and better Internet for everyone.”
Interested? Google is looking for communities that want to test high-speed networks and will collect responses until March 26.
Dear All,
well I do not think Google will become our sole Broadband Internet Service Provider. But I guess it might become one of our ISPs. Well, Google will have a tough path to undertake if they really want to penetrate other countries beside USA.
Just my 2 cents thoughts
Cheers
Edmund
From what I understand of your telecoms situation in the States, your choice of ISPs is rather more limited than ours in the UK. I can see that Google's entry into the US market as effectively a total service provider, especially as they have e-mail, might gain some ground. However, in the UK, they might need to be more competitive than they can afford, we have so much choice here already.
Mind you, the increases in speeds are somwhat slow, so maybe if they came in at the top end, they might find some market potential there. We'd all love the kind of speeds they have in South Korea...
