Load Google Translate Hi Pascal,
I'm sorry for any difficulties you encountered.
When you visit the document: http://www.element-14.com/community/docs/DOC-20824 and click on "View" is that where you get the error?
I am able to view the pdf without error. I was also able to download it without error.
Here is the url to take you directly to view the pdf:
Once you can view it, there is an option to "save" which has the same effect as download - so if the download link specifically is giving you an error that is one way you can try to get around it.
If you are still encountering issues, please let me know what browser you are using and we will assist you further.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.
Sincerely,
Christy Zurcher

Hello Christy,
as an Farnell FSE i've been learning and using E-14 since my registration.
I still do have a problem with my profile : http://www.element-14.com/community/people/gschattmann?view=profile
As you can see under topic: "About me" i've put in a bunch of informations my customers may be interested in.
Problem: All the information is only in one big block since the system does ignore "space, tabs and CRs "
Even HTML commands do not work.
I really like to design my profile more "reader-friedly"
Any suggestions for that issue ?
b.r. Goetz
Hi Goetz,
We are working towards making the profile more friendly and easier to format. At the moment, those fields do not allow formatting, so there is nothing you are doing wrong, it's simply not able to accept formatting at the moment.
We have many improvements we want to make to the site and this one is on the list.
Thanks for your feedback.
Christy
I think it is pretty easy to use. But there is no help option.
As a new user, I would have to describe my initial experience as highly offputting.
I attempted to view the site from Ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.8 with all current patches and updates applied. Mearly browsing to www.element-14.com caused ff to crash the X server and require me to force ubuntu to reboot with the power switch. I repeated this several times, attempting to get the guilty party to capture some kind of crash log without much success. I have never seen an application cause ubuntu to crash this badly, so there must be something out of the ordinary about your web application framework.
I was able to register and type this using ff on a Windows XP box.
One obvious bit of functionality that I have not been able to locate is some means of searching your forums. It may very well exist, but it isn't placed in any of the "obvious" places I looked on the page. As the site grows, search will become an increasingly important tool to help reduce the amount of duplicated discussion.
Edit: I've now spotted the search box blending in to the artwork at the page top. Perhaps the issue is simply being new to this site's style, but it may also be a problem that the search button itself simply blends in to the other artwork.
Hi Ross,
Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you found the search but we are always interested in hearing from our members what does and doesn't work well for them. We'll continue to take that into account for future improvements.
We'll look into the Ubuntu issue you mentioned. We aren't able to test every operating system, but do realize there are some new ones gaining in popularity.
Please continue to share your feedback with us as we strive to make your experience better.
Sincerely,
Christy Zurcher

Hi Ross,
I'm using Ubuntu lucid (10.4) and ff 3.6 to send this. I don't know what caused your crashes, but it doesn't seem to be the site or the software.
Romilly
Romilly, thanks for the report.
I'm guessing that there is something going on in the mix of media at the site that is triggering a bad intereaction between my video driver, the X server, and the kernel. The system is a stock Dell 2400 that was recently wiped clean and given a clean install of Ubuntu. Aside from a handful of developer toys (mostly a bunch of cross-builds of GCC) it is pretty much a bug standard installation. That said, the 2400 uses an integrated video device on the motherboard that is apparently the cause of numerous bug reports at the Ubuntu support fora.
On my system, lspci -nn | grep VGA says "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82835G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device [8086:2562] (rev 01)". I'm guessing you have different graphics hardware.
This is quite frustrating to debug as the crash takes the kernel with it, and I haven't managed to get even a core dump to stick around, let alone get Apport to notice and help file a real incident report.
The integrated video controller may well be the culprit. I had a lot of trouble with them in the (very) early days of linux.
I've tried two Ubuntu lucid configurations; a Dell 440 server (which also has an integrated controller), and an Ubuntu VirtualBox runnning on an Ubuntu host but with a Windows 7 client. Both have trawled the Element14 site witout problem. My main Ubuntu workstation is out of action atm but it too coped fine with the site.
I hope you manage to track your problem down; I've found this to be a valuable and friendly community.
Hi Christy,
I have noticed that the performance of the website has been sluggish lately (for me) when trying to navigate throughout your website.
Also, I had a hard time logging in yesterday ... I kept receiving this error message:
Service Unavailable - DNS failure
The server is temporarily unable to service your request. Please try again later.
Reference #11.bea2d740.1281478432.bf4f67
Do you publish the times when the system is being worked on ... or is it random?
Has anyone else experienced any problems?
Other than that, you're doing great ... I usually check in at least once a day.
Thanks,
Gregory
Hi Greg,
Thanks for your feedback.
We do post an announcement when there is a scheduled outage. We have not had any scheduled downtime recently, and I wasn't aware of an unplanned outage either, but will check into it for the date you've specified.
When the site is down on purpose, we put up a holding page with a message that it's down for maintenance, so whatever issue was impacting you yesterday was not something planned.
If you continue to experience this issue, any info you can provide about where you are in the world, your browser and operating system, date/time the problem occurred and error message (as you've noted below) is very helpful.
Thanks again for letting us know
Christy
Just thought I'd close the loop on this issue, since I found the problem.
Apparently, some of the ubuntu support fora out there are suggesting changing a parameter that controls Kernel Mode Setting in the intel i915 video driver (the one that supports the whole family of chipsets including the chipset on my motherboard). Unfortunately, some of those forum posts are naming the parameter to set incorrectly. With the parameter name misspelled, it doesn't take effect, and the bug it is attempting to work around is not worked around. And then, e14 crashes the video driver for reasons I have not diagnosed.
In short, any advice to set the i915 "modset" option should be understood to be advice to use the "modeset" option instead.
I discovered this by noticing an error message in the output of dmsg that seemed suspicious, and then seeing that same message appear as the last words the kernel said to a netconsole as it crashed. At that point, I googled for the actual error message which led to the discovery of the typo.
