Why did you become an electronics engineer?

What motivated you to chose electronics engineering for your career?  Did you always know this was your path, or did you "fall" into it?  Let's hear your story!

I took a physics class in high school where we had a brilliant teacher - he wrote the textbook we used. He taught us basic things and how to apply them for sneaky uses. He explained how to build a cell phone jammer, and a device to open any garage door. I thought it was amazing.

So, I entered college as a physics major. After learning you can't do anything with a BS in physics, and I'd pretty much have to get a PhD, I started looking at other engineering school degrees. I found out that all the cool stuff he taught us was really more electrical engineering than physics. I was interested in electrical engineering, but ultimately decided on computer engineering, which is a nice mix of EE and computer science. I had taken programming classes in high school and enjoyed returning to it.

So after college, I got into embedded software engineering, and for now I'm happy as a clam. In reply to your question, I 'fell' into it in college, but I was already in the ballpark since I'd done programming before and had an interest in sneaky uses for electronics.

Re: Why did you become an electronics engineer?
In my country, Turkey, a student graduated from high school must enter a University Acceptance Exam for his/her further edcution in a university. In my childhood, i mostly liked maths and some phsyics. In my time, we had to be successful in this exam and then to make a choice of the department which we want to continue our education. In my first year, i had choosed Computer Science Engineering but failed to win the exam. However, in the second year i changed my department to Electronics Engineering and won the exam. But, i always loved computers. So i dealed with understanding computers and programming them in all my free time. Years after graduated from university, i remembered that i am an electronics engineer. So i started spending my time dealing with electronics. I had base knowledge but no practise. Now i am doing my main job. Having learned programming technics in university helped me a lot developping my designing digital and embedded circuits and programing microcontrollers. When i look back the time, i say "I had choosed the right job". I am so much happy with being an electronics engineer.

Re: Why did you become an electronics engineer?

Maybe not common but surely most of the electronics engineers have a good computer and programming ground. To be electronics engineer a bit seems to be a physicist and  to be a computer science engineer seems to be to be a mathematician. A physicist has to have a good maths knowledge and an electronics engineer has to have a good computer and programming ground. A mathematician has not to have a good physics knowledge and it is not necessary, indeed. The case is also true for a computer science engineer.

Re: Why did you become an electronics engineer?

I couldn't imagine my self to be something else. Since I remember myself when I was less than 5 years old I was trying to understand how staff works!

Electronics&automation was in my blood I think so. In all of my games I had to find out how they worked and how the creator had made it.

The first thing I've seen as auto machine was the clothes washing machine. I was able to recognize all of it's commands (you now it's gonna take the water, the next step is to take the soap etc)

When I was 7 years old I played with the stereo and the speakers(serial connection, parallel)

I loved troubleshooting and read from the manual and fixing thing.

Later when I was in the Univ. in Greece I felt in love with microcontrollers too.I love working with pic MCU and making many projects such as custom chars in a LCD. I feel like I become father! You know like  giving life in these things. They are like my children!

Now I have done  my dreams true.I graduated last year and leave my country Greece and I am  in Sweden now looking for a job.

I think that I can leave my country but never electronics. Electronics is so holy thing for me is my life.

And don't forget: electronics & women need ''ground''

Maths and Physics were always my strongest subjects at school, and I was always fascinated in gadgets, especially televisions. How can a signal sent through the air be transformed into moving image of a cartoon, or football game.

I did other things after I left school, but when I decided to go to university, electronics was the only choice. I've never regretted that decision

I became instrested in electronics when I took a Digital Electronics course in college, and the rest was history.  To add, it is a passion and love/respect for electronics that we all choose this wonderful career path.

Re: Why did you become an electronics engineer?

I can`t say it was any `One Thing` in particular, but my Grandfather used to fix all manner of electrical and electronic things for friends and even people in the street as he had a reputation for being good at it.

I used to play at his feet in front of the coal fire with jars full of connectors and bulbs and fuses etc... and was taught the basics of electricity before I even went to nursery school.

my Mother taught me basic plant and sometimes animal Biology and also Minerology as well as making simple weather stations etc...

I had a fascination with Sci-Fi esp Dr Who and Star-trek (1960s), and later Totaly fell in love with Star wars.

I wanted to build a Robot like R2.

but back to topic... the patern I can see is that I love things that use many different parts and allow me mix them up in whatever combination I like, to Me all things are like LEGO.

I love Cooking and collect spices, and so as the Main cook for my family they get to try all sorts of cullinary experiments. same with Chemistry, I collect chems and make (and fix) many things with them.

Electronics is the same for me, but not only do I get to choose what parts I want to put together, but I also get to choose what I want to tell them to do (firmware), so it`s a double whammy

I`m the same with Plants and growing different veg (esp Chilis), Astronomy always has Something neat going on (when it`s a clear night), Radio has so many places to listen to!

lots and Lots of little tiny bits and endless imagination is what floats my boat
