One month into 2012...

Posted by WendyBourne Feb 1, 2012

Hi all,

I realised it was probably time for another blog post.  After, the reason for not blogging is because I am so busy, which must mean I have something to blog about!

2012 has started well.  We have new producte being added to our product range pretty much every month now, and the last few months have been no exception.  Our ever popular EZ-BoardWare range has expanded, now covering 8 different products, that you can see in our Product Browser on the Harwin.com website.  I helped design a PCB, which we had both made and virtually modelled for the Productronica show that I wanted to share with you, it gives a better idea of how some of the products are used, especially the cable clips.  Now I know it's not real, but it should help visualise the products in their correct settings:

Board Image 14.gif

It's a bit small on here, so I've attached a bigger version, but do please feel free to contact me if you want a bigger image, or any of our zoomed-in images - or samples, or techncial advice!

Datamate.jpg

The other main release that happened recently was the addition of another contact size to Datamate.  Previously, we had Large Bore (22AWG), and Small Bore (24-28AWG) - now introducing Extra Small Bore (28-32AWG) !

Key Part numbers are:

M80-01900xx - for the individual crimps

M80-788xxxx - for the Double Row L-Tek mould and crimps kit

M80-798xxxx - for the Double Row L-Tek mould and crimps kit

M80-4E1xxxxF1 - for a J-Tek Female mould and crimps kit, fitted with the basic hexagonal slotted jackscrew.

Again, any questions, contact me.

Well, I think that's enough for now.  We have more changes coming to the Harwin.com website soon, so watch this space!

Hi all,

Well, we made it all safely back from Munich; and, given the madness that the show started with, it was actually very fruitful for us!  The problem with that, of course, is that when we get back to the office, there are more e-mails and sample requests to service, more customers to contact and follow up.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, it's just a little manic for a week or two!

Anyway, investment in time now should lead to future monetary reward (that's why we are all here, after all), so we will endeavour to do our best to service these new leads as well as all our wonderful existing customers .

Back on the home front, we are doing more concept work on shining up our website - whole new page concepts are in development that should make our site even easier to use, and give you more information than ever.  I'm sure I will be able to give you all more news on that in the coming months.

Finally, a big Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends, colleagues and customers!

Bye for now!

OK, so far this show has been a classic example of how you can still succeed despite the obstacles that are thrown at you! Try this lot for size:

a) My colleague Neil Higby (through no fault of his own) breaks his arm on Saturday, and is not allowed to fly - leaving us a man down.

b) Monday morning flight - the plane is not allowed to land at a fog-bound Munich, We are diverted to Stuttgart, where we sit for an hour on the tarmac, then finally take off to land at Munich.

c) In the meantime, my colleague in Germany, Wolfgang, has reached our stand location to find no stand has been built by the exhibition staff, so we have to wait before they finish, and we can dress the stand.

d) Turn up 1st day (Tues), left our passes on stand, have to persuade German security guard to let us get them.

e) The stand carpet covering has not been removed, so we do that, Ben goes to throw it away, comes back and treads oil onto the carpet.

Despite all this, the show is going very well! We have received a good number of leads, and still 2 days to go.  The whole show is very busy, I expect lots of good business is being done.

Here's a picture of our stand grabbed at a quiet moment:

Do come and say hello, if you are coming to Messe Munchen!

That's all for the moment, full report after the show

Hello all again,

Here we are, 10 days to go -  well, strictly speaking 11 days until the start of the show, but my colleagues and I will be there in 10 days time, to "dress" the stand.  We've got a crazy early start on that Monday - the airport taxi is picking us up at 4am!!!  From there to the airport, to Munich, met by our German colleague, and drive to the Messe Munich.  Grab some lunch, then work all afternoon/evening to make it all look pretty and presentable.

This year we're going a bit braver - there'll be a theme to the stand!  Now, I'm not giving it away before-hand, but if you are there, do please come and have a look, and give us your feedback.  If this one goes well, we may well go all out for Electronica - so, fingers crossed!  I promise pictures afterwards.

We've also had a custom rack built to hold lots of reels of EZ-BoardWare product.  My plan is not to bring back too many of the reels, we've love to have lots of worthy customers come and have our free samples and see just how great a range it is, and how it can change their production for the better!

And no, I'm not just saying that because I work for Harwin - these products truly are that good and useful and process-changing.  We've also got a couple of additions to the range that we'll be featuring - I'll let you in on what they are after the show, if you're not there.  Click on the logo for more info on the range.

So, if you are in the area, do pop by and say hello.  You can't miss me, I'm the female engineer with the red hair

See you there!

Hi all,

It's time for us to be getting packed and ready to ship off to Germany again - this time for Productronica 2011.  The sister exhibition to Electronica, this show is for all the production equipment required to make those wonderful pieces of electronic equipment, and runs from November 15th to 18th.  As the website for the show says:

The world´s leading trade fair for all aspects of innovative electronics production:

  • Depicts the entire value chain
  • World-class innovations and trends
  • Internationality and quality of visitors
  • The leading international exhibition with a two-year innovation  cycle
  • Presence of international market leaders
  • First-rate programme of related events

So, why as a connector manufacturer, would Harwin attend this trade fair?  Well, we think that our EZ-BoardWare products are just what production engineers need to make the assembly of their boards easier.  The products will eliminate off-line operations, reduce re-work, simplify board layouts - everything a production engineer would be happy to see!  Of course, we'll be taking a selection of our other products along too, but we think that EZ-BoardWare is the product that everyone needs in their production line!

For those of you still unfamiliar with the range, let me give you a quick recap:

http://www.harwin.com/images/EZ-boardware-parts.jpg

The range includes Shield Clips, Shield Fingers (also useful as grounding contacts), Jumper Links, Test Points, Cable Clips (also useful as Coax grounding clips), Blade Fuse Holders and a Coin Cell Holder.

We'll also be introducing new additions / expansions to the range at the fair - for those of you not attending, I'll blog about them afterwards.

So, come and visit us at Stand B2.425, I'll be there with my colleagues Neil and Wolfgang, come and say hi!  See you there!

Hi all,

Thank-you to all of you who voted for us in the e-legacy awards last month - unfortunately, we didn't win this time around, but it was a privilege for us to be able to give out an award and be nominated in the same awards.

Now, for those of you familiar with our Datamate range, you might be aware that crimping afore-mentioned Datamate is not 100% intuitive the first time you are faced with it.  So, to help all you novices, Harwin have commissioned a little animation that should help with this situation - enjoy...

I hope you found that useful!  We aim to expand on this with other similar videos in the future - if you have any feedback for us, do please let me know, I'd love to hear from you.

That's all for now!

Hi all,

I wanted to share some exciting news from here at Harwin HQ – in fact two bits of news, somewhat related to each other.

Award Season approaches…

Firstly, we’ve been nominated for an award!  This award is part of the e-Legacy awards, hosted by the Electronic Product Design trade magazine.  Harwin has been shortlisted in the category of “EM&T Green Manufacturing” – and this was before the second piece of news (following shortly).  We would love to have your support if you would like to vote for us!  Here is the link to the voting page:

http://www.epdonthenet.net/awards_vote.aspx.

We feel that this is a subject where we are making an effort to contribute to the world stage, and it is certainly nice to be recognised for that effort.  Our thanks go to the e-Legacy team for this opportunity.  There are also other worthy companies in the other categories that you can vote for – Harwin are also sponsoring one award, the “Investment in Education and Training”.  This is a subject we are active in ourselves, with a strong apprenticeship scheme, so we applaud all the companies shortlisted in this category, and all others who contribute in this field.

Building Work nears completion – we’re getting even greener!

Our second piece of news relates to some major expansion work we have been doing at Harwin HQ.  One of our buildings has doubled in size, and the majority of this space will be used for a new water effluent treatment facility.  As I’m sure some of you know, we (as a vertically-integrated manufacturing company) have our own plating facility on-site, and plating methods require a high usage of water.

The new facility will clean all the rinse water and recycle it back into the plating area.  The heavy metals  - gold and tin - cleansed from the water can be reclaimed.  Although this is already in practice for gold, this is an industry first to reclaim the tin.

Previous to this construction, our water usage was up to 7,000 litres of water per hour.  This new facility will mean we use that same amount of water in 2 weeks!  That’s nearly a 34,000% improvement!

We should also see an improvement in the water quality used in the plating line – which will help maintain a high quality of plating finish on our products.  Currently, by using standard tap water, the level of conductivity in the water is typically 400-600 microsiemens – recycled water after treatment will be below 5 microsiemens.

The treatment plant is being constructed for us by PureTech, and is due to be commissioned in September.  I’m looking forward to my first tour round the new building!

Enough from me for the moment – as always, I can help on any questions specifically relating to Harwin products and their obsolescence.  Do please feel free to contact me on LiveHelp, or e-mail me through Element-14, or on technical@harwin.com!

Until next time!

Hello all,

We have recently encountered a number of questions on a similar theme coming in to Technical Central at Harwin HQ – namely that of obsolescence.  Some of you have may seen a brief reply I posted in response to an Element14 question a couple of months ago on this same issue as well.  So, I thought I’d do a quick summary of some thoughts on this issue.

Obsolescence – is it only a problem for Semis and Passives?

The short answer is no.  Any item from a supplier could go obsolete at any time, and if this happens in the middle of your production run, it’s a problem.  Especially (as is common in mil/aero and safety critical applications) if EVERY variation in build has to go through another set qualification testing.  However, it’s probably fair to say that an electromechanical  product (connector, hardware, and so on) is probably less of an issue than semis or passives.  After all, if the connector is a similar size, similar performance and fits in the same footprint, it’ll probably do a similar job.  No guarantees of course, depending on your initial specification, but probably easier to replace than that specific IC that does that specific program from that specific supplier...

Can I avoid obsolescence?

Possibly.  This will depend very much on a) what you specify and b) what research you do.

OK, what should I specify?

Products with a good, healthy track record and long history might be more likely to stay around – they’ve lasted this long, they should be around for a while longer.  Try not to specify Non-RoHS product if you can at all avoid it!  At some point the exempt markets (Medical, Military) may no longer be exempt, and more countries will also introduce their own equivalent legislations.  So, at some point it will just become uneconomic to keep making Non-RoHS product.

Our Datamate range is a classic example of this.  The product has been around for a very healthy number of years in many different guises, and we expand the range all the time.  In 2005/6, we effectively doubled the number of variations available by adding the RoHS versions.  Now, we have no active plans to make any of this range obsolete – after all, we are adding to it all the time, it is so popular.  However, at some future point, I would have to anticipate that it will not be economic to maintain the tin/lead tail versions due to our customers having to conform to RoHS, and they will become obsolete.  We actively recommend to our customers that they should really specify the RoHS versions on any new builds now  – and Element14/Farnell has certainly contributed by switching the whole range in the catalogue to RoHS-only products.

And what research should I do?

Ask questions of your suppliers – and keep asking questions.  Before specifying any product into a BOM, ask your sales contact what is the expected lifecycle of the item? They should be able to give you a guesstimate of its staying power.  One of our customers asks us to use the following criteria to specify the expected obsolescence:

On Last Time Buy or Obsolete

                Less than 2 years

                Between 2 and 5 years

                Between 5 and 10 years

                Over 10 years

By using this simple rating scale, hopefully you can make sure the availability of any item is longer than the time you expect to be producing and/or maintaining your end product.  Or if it is an essential part, know that you have to build up a stockpile by a certain date.  However, I suspect in some areas you may struggle to find suppliers who would be willing to commit to more than 10 years, and this could well be shorter for certain product types.

Also consider the supplier themselves - a track record of staying in business would be useful here! And how much of their supply chain do they control? For instance, Harwin has our own in-house moulding, stamping, plating and assembly, as well as Design and Quality, so we can assure customers that as long as we get the raw materials, we can keep making the products - no external sources to let us down.

Am I safe now?

Don’t assume this is the final answer, either.  You might want to set up a schedule to ask the same question at least once a year, so you can check that there are no issues arising.  Certainly at any time it starts to look as though your own product lifecycle will run longer than expected, re-question.  Then you can redesign any areas of the product before you continue to commit to a part that will not be available, or you can re-design and re-qualify well before it becomes an issue.

Is this just me having this problem?

You are not alone... There is a special interest group called the Component Obsolescence Group (COG), who look at issues related to obsolescence. Perhaps they would be able to help if you need assistance, or maybe this is such a big issue for your company that you should consider joining.  They have a UK-specific group and a Germany group, and work with a number of other international groups – check their website for details.  There are also businesses that can handle this type of activity for you, so you can hire someone to do it for you instead of handling it in-house. Also, distributors such as Element14/Farnell can also assist, I am sure!

Can you help me further?

I’m no expert on this specific subject, but I can help on any questions specifically relating to Harwin products and their obsolescence.  Do please feel free to contact me on LiveHelp, or e-mail me through Element-14, or on technical@harwin.com!

That’s all for now, I hope you will all find something useful in here!
