About | Smart or protected switches are MOSFETs with integrated logic which allows protection and diagnostic functionalities. Examples of typical loads could be e.g. lamps, heating systems, solenoids, motors, electronic components (ECU). In simple terms protected switches could be seen as a combination of a relay and a fuse but with sophisticated diagnosis and protection features. The Smart Switches are for example protected against overvoltage, under voltage, overcurrent, and short circuit.
For this road test, Infineon is packaging three shields plus two controller boards for a variety of applications. To simplify prototyping, Infineon also has libraries for Arduino available for the XMC microcontroller board: https://github.com/infineon
Each official RoadTester will receive the following 5 items for testing:
24V Protected Switch Shield The 24VSHIELDBTT6030TOBO1 is a 24V protected switch shield with BTT6030-2EKA and BTT6020-1EKA for Arduino. The BTT6030-2EKA and BTT6020-1EKA are integrated high side power switches and part of PROFET+ 24V family. This power switch evaluation board is compatible with Arduino microcontroller boards and with Infineon’s XMC microcontroller kits using Arduino form factor. The target applications of PROFET+ 24V family are resistive, capacitive and inductive loads. It can be controlled either by an Arduino board or ARM-powered Infineon microcontroller kits using Arduino form factor. 24VSHIELDBTT6030TOBO1
Protected Switch Shield with BTS50010-1TAD for Arduino The 12V Protected Switch Shield with BTS50010-1TAD from Infineon is a flexible evaluation board that can be controlled by microcontroller boards using the Arduino form factor such as Infineon’s XMC™ microcontroller kits. The shield with Infineon’s high-side switch Power PROFET™ BTS50010-1TAD can be controlled by a programmable microcontroller, e.g. XMC1100 Boot Kit, a 32-bit ARM® powered MCU from Infineon. For stand-alone mode, BTS50010 1TAD can be commanded ON/OFF by connecting pin P0.3 to 5 V (P2.10) or 12 V (VBat). The IS signal of BTS50010 is monitored by the on-board circuitry, indicating operation mode of BTS50010 on LED3 (green for normal mode) and LED4 (red for FAULT mode, such as overtemperature or short circuit to GND). SHIELDBTS500101TADTOBO1
Low-Side Switch Shield with BTF3050TE for Arduino The Low-Side Switch Shield from Infineon consists out of three BTF3050TE low-side switches of the HITFET™+ family providing three independent power channels that can be controlled via the input pins. The shield is compatible with microcontroller boards using the Arduino form factor for example the corresponding ARM® powered XMC™ microcontroller kits from Infineon and supports fast and easy prototyping of applications with BTF3050TE. With a nominal load current of 3 A the BTF3050TE is able to drive resistive, inductive and capacitive loads. Furthermore the smart low-side switch provides diagnosis and protection features (e.g. overtemperature, overcurrent).
SHIELDBTF3050TETOBO1
XMC1100 Boot Kit The XMC1100 Boot Kit is an Arduino compatible base board using Infineon’s XMC1100 ARM Cortex – M0 32-bit Microcontroller. It has two rows of pin headers which fully compatible with Arduino shield. Hence, user can buy various Arduino shield boards off-the-shelf to test the capabilities of XMC1100 Microcontroller. It is equipped with the following features:
KITXMC11BOOT001TOBO1
Arduino UNO The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328 (datasheet). It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. The Uno differs from all preceding boards in that it does not use the FTDI USB-to-serial driver chip. Instead, it features the Atmega16U2 (Atmega8U2 up to version R2) programmed as a USB-to-serial converter. A000066

Introduction First of all I'd like to express my thanks to Infineon and Element 14 for selecting me as the roadtester of this charming family of boards! I do not want to bore you with the duplication of the process of opening a package. I need to confirm, the shipment was very fast. All packed and delivered safely. The set consist of 5 boards. The roadtest concern three smart switches boards. They are accompanied with arduino board and Infineon's "arduino colleague" - XMC 1100 development board. details below in documentation section. Omitting the unpacking phase I would like to show, that I found the box of 24V Switch very convenient to keep all boards together
DocumentationInfineon prepared very professional support for its devices. It is easy accessible on the...

Sharing unboxing image of the Infineon Smart Power Switch Bundle which I received today. Tested Low-Side Switch Shield (BTF3050TE) for Arduino used to run different motors DC motors, a 3W motor pump, upon getting PIR detector an Ultrasonic inputs to start and stop the motor with OLED display with buzzer alarm to sound the status of running motor. It doesn't get heated up so no heat sinks or forced cooling is required for this shield with Arduino. As per specifications shield with BTF3050TE for Arduino with a nominal current of 3A is able to drive resistive, inductive and capacitance loads with over temperature and overcurrent features. Though haven't tested with XMC1100 boot kit. 24V Protected Switch shield with BTT6030-2EKA /1EKA for Arduino was tested with...

Overview I cannot remember what initial called my attention to this test. I have tested products for many companies in the past, but I usually focus on items further towards the end-user end of the spectrum. I had started this test process with a project in mind, but I quickly found that my plan was not suitable for these products. This all made this test a challenge for me personally and my experience with these boards reflects more on my skill set than on the products themselves. I was honored to be chosen as one of the RoadTest members for this product and apologize that my experience has not produced a lot of reportable results. Products and Packaging Unboxing each product was a good experience. Each board is clearly a very professional design, well labeled and very compact in...

First, I want to thank Infineon and Element14 for this road test. It was an interesting change from my previous tests. I had not that much contact with devices from Infineon, so I was curios to get first-hand experience. (This also means I will not really touch on the Arduino or the XMC1100 board in this review, since I was focusing on the shields) The boards So there are three Arduino shields to test, which 'just' provide load switching capability. At a first glance this seems silly - why should you by such a shield when you easily can use a MOSFET for switching your load? Especially when considering that these switches are, when compared to the FETs that Infineon has to offer, quite limited in their current and voltage capability? The answer is hidden in the word 'protected'. In...

1. Brief of this Road test Smart or protected switches are MOSFETs with integrated logic which allows protection and diagnostic functionalities. Examples of typical loads could be e.g. lamps, heating systems, solenoids, motors, electronic components (ECU). This haven been part of product line of Infineon on IPM module with larger Size and Capacity. The module in much compact size and strong enough for application below 100W. First off thank you Element14 and Infineon for the opportunity to take part in this RoadTest as I was at first a bit hesitant from previous experience with Infineon's boards but then curiosity got me. Unboxing: First off I want to say how happy I am to see that Infineon decided to change their packaging as now it seems to be a lot more on par and was a great sight to see. As you can see in the picture below the view of the Boot kit in the box (new version) versus the old packing. I think tho that if Infineon just inserted a backing on the old packaging it would have been sufficient as well but glad to see the change and the fact they might have gotten a few complaints about parts breaking off on the Boot kit or coming damaged to clients. So that being said well on you Infineon for...
