A driverless "POD" is whisking students to the other side of the campus at Masdar City (near Abu Dhabi). These EV vehicles go 25Mph and can reach a range of about 37miles on a single charge. So, charging every hour then? Built by a dutch company called "To Get There," these cars are trying to fill Masdar's dream of being a "zero carbon, zero waste, car-free city." RFID and other onboard sensors help the Personal Transportation System (PRT), keep it on task and able to avoid obstacles. Alt ...

Brain driven car

Posted by Eavesdropper Feb 22, 2011
When I first watched this video I had one question, what if the driver spaces out for a little bit? Although my question was not answered, I did see an impressive video of the brain controlled car in operation. The "MadeInGermany" autonomous car designed by Autonomous Labs in collaboration with the Freie Universitat in Berlin, has been controlled by an iPhone, iPad, and now a EEG (electroenzephalogram) tool. The Drive-By-Wire system interprets electromagnetic signals produced by the brain ...

Air-powered cars

Per Tunestal, Combustion Engines at Lund University in Sweden researcher, is working on air hybrids cars that he claims are cheaper to manufacture. He states, “The technology is fully realistic. I was recently contacted by a vehicle manufacturer in India which wanted to start making air hybrids."The concept is to store energy from braking and vibration into compressed gas to use later. For stop and go operation, short drives, and acceleration the compressed gas in used to start the inertia ...
Networking vehicles with one another and with the infrastructure gives the driver information on the situation beyond his or her field of vision and warns the driver about accidents or traffic jams. Researchers from Fraunhofer will be unveiling the latest applications for traffic safety and efficiency at this year’s embedded world Exhibition & Conference in Nuremberg, Germany. The Fraunhofer Institute for Communication Systems ESK in Munich, Germany, are working on innovative id ...
The twin Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity have outlasted their planned three-month lifetime and given us our closest look yet at the Martian surface. But the solar-powered rovers have covered only 21 miles of Martian terrain in their combined 11 years of operation, leaving most of the surface unexplored. Future Mars surface missions could cover more ground with a platform that can hop great distances in the planet's thin atmosphere and weak gravity. Since summer 2009, researchers and st ...
Could ‘talking cars’ save lives? Auto companies are developing safety systems using advanced Wi-Fi signals and GPS systems that could allow vehicles to communicate with each other on the road. The cars could then send messages to warn their drivers about potential crashes. Ford Motor Co. is demonstrating the technology at the Washington Auto Show in the nation's capital. The technology sends out multiple messages per second about the vehicle's location, speed, brakes and steer ...
