It sounded like a dream come true. No wonder it never happened.   A multi-purpose robot called Laundroid developed by Seven Dreamer, a Japanese company, was meant to function the way everyone has always dreamed up. The black obelisk was meant to be a washing machine, ironing, laundry-folding and drying robot all packaged into one. Sadly, this product will never hit shelves because the company filed for bankruptcy. They owe over 2.25 billion yen ($20.1 million USD) to 200 creditors.   ...
Researchers at MIT have developed a new learning system, known as a learning-based particle simulator that allows robots to create shapes by molding materials together. The robots also have the ability to make predictions about interacting with solid objects and liquids. The system could also help to refine the robot's approach into shaping models of different shapes, like clay or rolling rice for sushi.   Physical simulators are used in robotic models that can obtain data on how material ...
Mote Marine Laboratory’s Micro-Fragmentation and Fusion Method can speed the growth of brain, boulder, and star corals- a trio of reef-building species. (Image credit: Pixabay)   This year’s Earth Day theme is “Protect our Species,” and rightfully so as life on land and sea are headed for extinction at alarming rates. While our oceans are seeing dwindling numbers in terms of fish, sharks, and whales (and other marine animals), coral reefs are also endangered, and i ...
The Pentagon has named two finalists of the JEDI contract winners. (Image Credit: Ivan Cholakov via Getty Images)   Two finalists in the $10 billion dollar, decade-long, JEDI cloud contract were announced on Wednesday by the Pentagon and Oracle was not named as a finalist. Despite lawsuits, protests and complaints to the president, Microsoft and Amazon have been named finalists. The contract aims to bring cloud computing to the defense department.   One of the main reasons the contr ...
Autonomous robots can be seen doing the odd job in place of human workers. Retail stores like Walmart have already put robots to use (as a janitorial role), and while that may seem like a good idea to boost sales, it does pose the risk of job losses for employees. However, Walmart isn't the only company using robots for specific tasks. Companies around the world are also using autonomous robots to deliver packages, especially in aircraft drones.   The autonomous bot deployed by Walmart ...
Researchers from  MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and Yale University have developed a robot, known as RoCycle that can sort through recycling by picking up paper, plastic, and glass. RoCycle uses an arm that's bundled with soft grippers and sensors to identify what each material is made of through touch. The research will be presented later this month at the IEEE International Conference on Soft Robotics in Seoul, South Korea. It's also supported by companies ...

The acquisition will bring deep and vision learning applications to Boston Dynamics family of robots. (Image credit: Boston Dynamics via YouTube)   Boston Dynamics has announced their acquisition of deep-learning vision company Kinema Systems- a Menlo Park (California) group that specializes in developing AI for industrial robotic arms. More specifically, they provide those robotic arms with 3D vision, allowing them to locate and move parts and boxes. The system can even identify diverse p ...
