Hi everyone,   I wasn't chosen as a finalist but Chrystal and I have decided to partake in this challenge. We are both very happy with the choices of finalists and wish all the best to each and every one of them!!   The Beaglebone Black from Texas Instruments will be the life of the guitar. I will have a 4.3" touch screen that will be used as the user setup and the virtual strings. Touch sensors will be used on the neck of the guitar to let the BBB know where your fingers are located ...
Hey again! A LOT of things have happened in my life since the proect began (I randomly adopted a puppy, among other things), so I haven't had a lot of time to dedicate entirely to the project. Will most probably be able to dedicate more in a couple of weeks! First days   So, the first time while waiting for my kit has been spent with doing some research on which tools to use, and how to connect everything into the BBB. Since my local SoftLab is closed until January 20, I decided to fo ...
To get started, my focus is on the Beaglebone Black(BBB) is on what Linux software is running on it and to determine if, in fact, it needs to be updated. If so, I then need to figure out what distribution and revision of Linux has the best chance of real time behavior with puredata and jack.   I plug the BBB via USB into a host machine and run the browser to the default USB Ethernet IP address for the BBB:  http://192.168.7.2/.  It works and brings up this page:     Th ...
The first part of this project I have decided to undertake is the development of the key mechanism - allowing the existing toy piano keys to generate note messages in the digital domain. I have decided to start with this particular task as, from a technical point of view, it could arguably be the most challenging part of the project, with next to nothing in regard to existing examples of it being done. I've done a lot of trial and error in past projects to find a reliable solution for doing this ...
In addition to the blog posts here, I will also be maintaining a github repo with the project, posts, ideas, work in progress, etc. Feel free to create issues if you have any suggestions or questions! The following is my original proposal (slightly modified). The beginnings of my next post will appear in the repo shortly. Feel free to check there for a sneak peak.   The Basics  This project will seek to create a union of the analog generation capabilities of the SN76477 and the digita ...
I collected my challenger kit from the parcel office today, and decided to do an unboxing video (with a little help from a slithery friend...)   I'll be doing a series of videos during the course of the challenge, so let me know if you have any particular questions or want tips on something and I'll try and cover those things in one of the upcoming episodes.   Enjoy! ...
Season's greetings, my friends! The suspense is killing me - I'm away for a couple of days for Christmas and I got a notification that my Challenger Kit is there waiting to be collected from the parcel office when I get back! If you're one of the selected challengers, your kit should be with you shortly also, and we can get this party started. I'll post an unboxing video once I'm back home in a few days.   Also, don't forget that you don't have to be one of the selected challengers who wil ...

Prelude Piano keyboard interfaces on synthesisers are great. A familiar interface for playing music, they can be used to trigger any type of synthesised sound or audio sample, but sometimes these often-plastic devices can take away some of the fun and satisfying-feel of playing sounds that resemble that of an acoustic piano or traditional instrument. Playing an instrument is about a lot more than just the sound you create - the way you play it; the physical feedback; and the overall feel and a ...
