Oh yeah, it works! I hooked the suit up to PureData and after some tweaking it worked! I made some small tests just to try it out, and it's really a lot of fun, playing around with this!   I coded the Teensy to receive all the inputs (I decided to go for 6 inputs for this initial prototype), and gave them different control numbers. In the beginning I didn't really get what these control numbers meant, but I figured it out quickly as soon as I launched PD and I hooked it up to the patch.   There will still be some calibration left to do, as I still have to make some details to the base suit to make it more snug so it can adapt to the stretch sensors, but this is reall ...
Then it was the thing about hooking everything up! This was really more difficult than I had imagined, but it all worked out well eventually!   I spent some time soldering and tinkering to get everything to connect properly, after I had made the remaining stretch sensors. Today at our local hackerspace I did some calibration of the stretch sensor prototype I had finished. I was assisted by some other people who hang around here, who helped me out a bit with ideas on how to adapt the code in the best possible way.   I adapted the teensy code through adding some mathematics, and used a different resistor to get the values I wanted. There we go! I've finished up creating the base of the suit, onto which I will add stretch sensors and the electronics! Firstly, I'd like to say that it has been great to take part in this challenge. Personally, it has been a great opportunity to return to making stuff after months of no hardware projects. Also, it has been very helpful to get myself with the Bela platform and BeagleBone Black, and this will be incredibly useful for future projects. This entry shows how Kazumi can be used to play drum machine sounds.   The responsiveness of the instrument, thanks to the ultra-low latency Bela platform, makes it perfect for percussive instruments. I wanted to try this with some classic drum machine sounds.   The Pure Data patch uses the excitation from the piezos to trigger the drum samples, which are stored in arrays. I have almost finished the build of Kazumi. All the pad cables are done and connected. I've made a little circuitboard to attach to the analog input sockets on the Bela cape, which contains the circuit for all 7 piezos. I have cut some side panels for the on/off buttons, audio in/out, etc. I still need to solder some cables to the master volume potentiometer and the rotary encoders. Yesterday I finished preparing the 7 touch pads and started putting together the cables that connect them to the MPR121 breakout boards.   One of the mistakes I have made is ordering the wrong magnetic tape. The one I've received isn't self adhesive and it has striped polarity north-south which makes it harder for both parts to snap in the right position. The parts feel very robust, even where there are thin walls. I did some quick work with finishing up the Pure Data patch, although there might turn up some further modifications that need to be done to be completely done. As always things keep on evolving as you work with them!   I worked with adding volume meters to the sinus wave and sawtooth oscillators, to allow for changing up the sound using the suit. In order to undertake this project I had to completely take-apart the toy piano, unfortunately slightly damaging it in the process due to the way it was originally connected together. Yesterday I built the first touch pad, here's how it went:   First of all, I bought a 600mm x 300mm sheet of 1mm clear acrylic, which is more than enough to fit all 7 pads. I learned that 1mm acrylic sheet is almost double as expensive as 3mm sheet. It is also significantly more difficult to find.
