Introduction Blog,   Hello Everybody, As I plan to Upcycle an old video VHS player, this week I will tune it as I will remove everything from the video player that I am NOT going to use. After that I will manage to put a power supply for the Arduino (5volts). Also I plan to start installing cables for the sensors that are going to measure the temperature outside. Also I will explore more in details the ability to get out video signal or at least trigger some another device to get out the ...
This is my project trailer. It's a 1977 Corsair Travel Trailer. She's not much to look at right now, but I've got big plans for her. I'll post a better picture of her later, this is just to get an idea of what I'm looking at.   My plan is to completely redo the interior and transform her into a modern tiny home. I purchased her for 500, completely gutted. She is a complete rebuild. The floor and roof are both spongy, so I'll be replacing both of those. My timeline for that is May - June ...
For the software, I wanted to keep the UI loosely coupled from the control, I also have been wondering about blue tooth vs wifi. By using Node.js for the server side components that means the same language (javascript) can be used for all of the software which should make things simpler. Another advantage of Node is because it is multi-platform it can be written and tested without the need for the Edison. So I've been doing this on Windows so far.   Overview My plan to achieve this is to us ...
"Enchanted Refrigerator"   My project proposal for "Enchanted_Refrigerator" is regarding upcycle my 2002 made godrej refrigerator with Intel Edison, So It can order consumable from Amazon using Amazon Dash Replenishment Service when consumables are about to run out and I have plan to add a NeoPixel RGB LED Lights with Intel Edison in refrigerator which is connected to my IoT based Smart Health monitor so by realtime data of my heart rate and body temperature, Color and pattern of this LED ...

Brent Papesh bpapesh and I will be working on this project.   We will use an old front load washing machine to be used as the main assembly of the rotary hydroponic system controlled by the Intel® Edison Kit for Arduino   Steps to adapt the washing machine:   The washing machine drum will be adapted to hold the growing medium; A mounting for the light source will be fit in the centre of the drum; Provision for water pump, fans and sensors; Motor and drum turning mechanis ...
I have this old Panasonic DR-28/RF-2800 back from the 80’s, in my bedroom that I do not want to give for recycling. As a matter of fact, I am very sentimentally attached to it. It was my first analog radio receiver with a digital display along with a tuning dial, a BFO for SSB and CW (morse code) reception, an RF gain to cope with strong signals, a true analog (needle type) signal strength meter, long-medium-short wave (HF) coverage, FM band, portable battery operation plus mains, a retrac ...
I would like to start this post by thanking the folks at element14, and the sponsor Intel for selecting my proposal for the design challenge. And here is a quick intro to my challenge entry -"Wake up to the Upcycled Clock"   I have an old clock which was handed to me by my mom and is one of the few thing I had the movers pack, when I moved from Toronto,Canada to Los Angles,CA for work. The idea is here is to upcycle the clock and add some smarts to it using the Intel Edison. If you plan o ...
While I was watching one of the Intel Edison videos, they talked about suppliers.   When I first purchased my Intel Edison, they were so new that third party manufacturers hadn't geared up to support them. Intel had produced a couple but IMO they were limited either by the size, or by a lack of onboard level conversion, hence it sat waiting.   Roll forward to 2017 and those third party maufacturers have come to the party. More importantly the price supports makers that want

Hello Element14 Community!   For this project I will be upcycling a Hermes 3000 Typewriter. This specific typewriter was built around the early 1960's. Typewriters have become obsolete due to personal computers, however they are still collected because they are very interesting machines that reflect a different era of engineering.   I would like to bring this typewriter into the 21st century using the Intel Edison. It will be more of a novelty idea rather then solving a realistic probl ...
Hello Guys, after reading about the Upcycle it Design Challenge, I looked around I just found myself sitting in middle of a  junk yard ( so much od electronics stuffed around) . I looked around and found a few things and found they can be salvaged and re-purposed.   I just planned to make a talking skull, that would recognize  voice commands and reply Unread Gmail count, Temperature, Humidity etc. Sounds like the usual stuff? There are some more fun too. How about some motion tra ...
The plan for the design challenge is to take some old bits that have been in my scrap drawer and make something interesting from them in the form of an interactive toy car and driver.   The Edison will provide the brain and communications which will allow the car to be controlled from a tablet or phone via MQTT. As the vehicle moves the headlights / indicators would activate and the driver would talk and move. The vehicle is an old radio controlled car that has 2 motors and skid steers ...
Project Index Next>>   Introduction   This is my first post as part of Upcycle It design challenge.   Project idea:   I have an old smoke detector that I would like to use in combination with other wifi connected electric appliances (I haven't seen yet a "smart oven" in BestBuy), which has a risk of causing fire or other devices that can control electricity supply to them (as suggested by mcb1 - like Sonoff WiFI switch or the project by jasonwier92) I want to add a ...
In the last series of posts First Steps - Intel Edison  I outlined installing software, Flashing the image and some frustrations.   Thanks to the kind people at element14, I have an Edison Mini Breakout board to try. https://software.intel.com/en-us/assembling-intel-edison-board-with-intel-edison-mini-breakout-board     I didn't realise that the Edison mini breakout board came with an Edison.           Connections The guide makes this statement ...

First of all I am very grateful and excited to be picked for his challenge.  When thinking about what I could do for this challenge, I thought about how much I could not stand using an APC AP9211 interfaces. The APC AP9211 is a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) that was widely popular around the year 2000. It could turn on and off outlets via serial communications (RS-232) and with an optional card be controlled over TCP/IP, most commonly SNMP and TELNET. While these are doable parameters for a ...

Blog Index Next >>   Upcycled Intel Edison Nixie DisplayLook what I recently found on my attic. A nice box with a six digit nixie display. Even some documentation was in the box, showing that this is a 'Impulszähler EZK' from 'electromatic'. I can't remember how it found the way to my home. It might be that I bought it long ago on a flee market, or maybe I got it from a friend. Currently there is a lot of interest in bringing these nixie tubes to life. Lot's of nixie tube clock k ...
