Scientists have designed and developed a robotic shrimp that's eerily similar to the pistol shrimp. The pistol shrimp is just a few inches in length and has a massive claw that is so strong it can knock out its prey with the shockwave when the claw snaps. Once the claws come together, bubbles develop, collapse and shoot out a bolt of plasma that creates a flash of light with temperatures reaching 8,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Researchers explain how they designed a robotic claw inspired from the pis ...
Hot Wheels has always been great at giving users the virtual experience for the past few years when it comes to toy cars. Their toys like Hot Wheels AI, Mindracers and Augmoto all have been focused on making it a driving experience that is  played like a video game. This year, Hot Wheels has finally created something that will please their fans - the new TechMods set. The vehicle is controlled by an app, and you build the vehicle yourself and which can be controlled with your phone. The pro ...
NASA to send robotic bees to Mars in an attempt to study the planet further. The space agency has implemented this idea ahead of sending humans to our neighbor planet. The image shows a concept of how Marsbees would work. (Photo via NASA)   What’s the next step after Mars rovers? Swarms of robots!   Dubbed “Marsbee,” a swarm of robotic bees are being planned to boost and support a central rover. The rovers have some limited capacities in their technology, but that ...
The Volocopter saw its first tethered passenger flight during CES 2018. (Image credit: Volocopter)   German drone manufacturer Volocopter recently demonstrated its first manned flight at this year’s CES, of course, it was tethered and indoors but it’s still a milestone never the less. With the onset of autonomous vehicles, it was only a matter of time before autonomous drones transitioned into pilotless taxis set to enter into service sooner than we might think.   The Vol ...
The seventh successful launch of Blue Origin’s New Shepard reusable suborbital spacecraft. (Image credit: Blue Origin)   The Skywalker’s have always been a family of many talents- young Anakin became a notable Sith Lord, his son Luke became a Jedi Knight, his daughter lead a great Rebellion
ot-so-great Resistance, and distant cousin Mannequin made it through a successful test flight aboard a reusable suborbital spacecraft. “Always two there are; no more, no less-” ...
While the city won’t be outright banning these bots, they are now not allowed on crowded city sidewalks. These bots have a lot of rules to follow before they hit the streets (Image via Reuters)   When it was first introduced, the idea of delivery robots sounded absurd. Now, it’s close to becoming a reality, but maybe not in San Francisco. Companies are currently testing out these bots, but are hitting a road block when it comes to San Fran. Recently, the city’s Board of S ...
Google’s AutoML utilizes reinforcement learning to build superior versions of itself.   Earlier this year (May 2017), the Google Brain Team unveiled their AutoML AI (Artificial Intelligence) platform capable of creating its own AIs. Moving forward, the Team recently announced that the same AI platform has succeeded in creating an offspring (or child) that has outperformed anything made by Google engineers. AutoML used deep learning to build the new AI, which uses multiple layers of ...
The needle is cost effective and allows doctors to see targeted tissue that’s normally difficult to spot during procedures. If you have trypanophonia you may want to look away. (Photo via Nature)   No one ever looks forward to having surgery, but if it has to be done, minimally invasive procedures are more appealing. Usually, they leave less scar tissue, have a quicker recovery time, and have a lower risk of infection. But there are also several downsides, like getting a detailed loo ...
These new artificial muscles not only prove to be strong, but are also easy to make and cost effective. Though it looks like a snake made in origami, it’s actually a new soft robot (Photo from MIT CSAIL)   Because soft robotics are flexible, it allows these machines to move in ways similar to living organisms. The only problem is the more flexibility these bots have, the more their strength is reduced. This may no longer be an issue thanks to a new discovery from MIT scientists. A te ...
Boston Dynamics Atlas robot can now jump and perform backflips on its own without assistance. (Image credit Boston Dynamics)   Boston Dynamics’ Atlas has come a long way since it was first developed back in 2013 as a spin-off of the company’s earlier PETMAN robot. Back then, the mechanical monstrosity had to be tethered to a bulky power supply and used an overhead crane for safety purposes as it had a tendency to fall down a lot. DARPA Program Manager Gill Pratt emphasized that ...
Toyota’s Platform 2.1 autonomous vehicle features two modes- Guardian and Chauffeur. (Image credit Toyota)   Last month Toyota unveiled its latest version of their autonomous vehicle- the Lexus-modified (600hL) Platform 2.1, which features better sensors, improved detection and a pair of steering wheels for better human control. The vehicle is a base for Toyota Research Institute’s autonomous research systems known as Guardian and Chauffeur, which provides increased navigation ...
MNS robots can self-heal if one becomes damaged or malfunctions. (Image credit Nature Communications)                                          All references to ‘Skynet’ aside, researchers from the University Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels have developed robots that can function on th ...
Google introduces its own AR software development kit dubbed ARCore. ARCore doesn’t require any special equipment; you only need your phone. (Image via Google)   Not too long ago, Apple stepped up their VR game with ARKit, their first attempt at an augmented reality platform. A tool that allows developers to create AR apps easily, it’s already yielded some impressive results like a virtual pet game and restaurant app that displays food on a plate. Not to be outdone, Google step ...
Swedish company Einride is looking to employ of fleet of 200 T-Pods by 2020 for a new autonomous delivery service. The T-Pod looks like something out of a sci-fi film (Photo via Einride)   We all heard the stories about self-driving cars and their unfortunate accidents, but ever think you’d see a self-driving delivery truck on the road? What kind of accidents do you imagine? One Swedish company is aiming to make this a reality. Einride recently showed off their prototype of T-Pod, an ...
Amp Cortex Robotic Sorter. (Image credit Amp Robotics)   Let’s face it, we live in a world of ‘plastic Armageddon’ where an estimated 300-million tons of it are produced each year according to the World Watch Institute, and a lot of it is buried in landfills or finds its way to the oceans, culminating in giant floating islands. Surely recycling must be a surefire solution to help curb this environmental scourge but we’d be wrong, as a 2012 report from the EPA states ...
