GIZMO 2

Hi, Looking for a user friendly way to automatically start the Gizmo2 on power up. Understand its possible to change the BIOS to do this.  Anyone had any success with this?  Read various threads on adding external buttons and 3D printing a case to give a user friendly option but wondered if anyone has any advice on updating the BIOS? Thanks. ...
In a previous post, a small bar graph display was used to provide a visual animation of disk activity on Gizmo2. This is the updated version with the actual lightbar that is going to be used.   The video below has a quick look at how the light bar was constructed, then goes on to animate it and see what it's going to look like shining through the orange translucent half moon cut out on the case. To keep things interesting, there's a few extra animation sequences that can be used as an act ...
Wow! what a busy couple of weeks, I've had a few extra days away from home that I wasn't expecting so updates have been a bit short on the ground, I decided to get straight on with things rather than blog intermittently.   The project is close to complete, most of the case is now finished, see pictures below. Gimo2 has had a few more wires surgically implanted onto an expansion port so gpio signals can be sent out.   The current point of focus is soldering up some proto board with ...
I used the Gizmo 2 single-board computer for this project.     This project was originally inspired by a few of the image processing projects that I have gotten involved in as well as my strong interest in robotics. After hearing about the Gizmo 2's small size, reasonable power consumption and fast x86_64 processor, I saw it as a perfect fit for small to moderate size robotics projects that involve large amounts of computation. With all of the buzz lately over self driving cars, I tho ...
Deciding to choose a new and unfamiliar material was maybe a bad idea at first, I was a out of my comfort zone and was putting off getting started with using it.   Well that was until I made my very first cut... from then on, I knew aluminium composite was going to be a great choice of material to use for not only this but also future projects. It's strong, has a professional metallic finish and is very easy to work with.   The top of the case is all but finished, some tidying up n ...
In it's initial build, the console is going to have a nightrider style light chaser on the top to act as a disk activity monitor. There are plenty of other animation styles that can be used but for the proof of concept, I stuck to just the light chaser that moves forwards and backwards.   The light monitor is being treat as an event driven animation. the first part of the video shows the animation being controlled independently by a setInterval function which in turn repeatedly calls anot ...
Waiting for some bits and bobs to be delivered for the case build, I've been trying to find out how to access and use the gpio ports on Gizmo2.   The ubuntu install has a /sys/class/gpio folder and the export/unexport files where gpio pins can be controlled through user space but seems to be missing the controller chip.   I tried a few things to get them opened up including making a python script to bash number 0 to 999 at the export file with no success.   Clearly, this was a ...
Mame is a Multiple arcade machine emulator allowing computers to play games from arcade machines by providing it with rom files. Installation is straight forward but can have some pitfalls if you don't know the procedure.   Installing Mame is as easy as opening Appgrid or Ubuntu software centre, searching for it and choosing install. Once it's finished installing, it can be launched using it's icon in your applications/games menu or by typing "mame" into a terminal. Just like the Amiga em ...
The Gizmo's main limitation is it's ram which means that the less resources the system needs, the more we can devote towards applications that we want to use.   There are lots of lightweight Desktop environments that can help reduce these resources but it's worth considering launching programs without any desktop or file manager if you want to use your system towards a dedicated task.   When Ubuntu boots up, you should be presented with a log in screen asking for your password. At ...
To be able to play Amiga games, an emulator is needed; specifically SF-UAE.   The emulator needs to have roms that act as a kind of BIOS called kickstart in order to boot games. A company bought the rights to own kickstart so to use them legally, you either need to own an Amiga or purchase the license. Luckily, my collection of old Amiga's lets me use these kickstarts. I managed to find them by searching for Amiga Kickstart downloads in Google.   The games can be downloaded for free ...
It's been longer than anticipated finishing off installing the core software; and it's all Gizmo's fault..   There I was, quietly sat going through some terminal commands thinking I was nearly done when the the output of the last command listed out into the terminal:          lscpu Architecture:      i686 CPU op-mode(s):    32-bit, 64-bit Byte Order:        Little ...
Here's a video demonstrating launching application outside of the desktop environment on Ubuntu, A screen recorder launches the in turn launches Warsow and records it in high+ graphics mode while capturing the screen at 30 fps.   If you got the time, watch all the way through as I tear it up on Warsow!     Lucie ...

Gizmo on Fire!!

Posted by lucie tozer Top Member Apr 17, 2015
I came across the Catalyst Fire graphics chipset drivers for Gizmo2's G series system on chip and found the performance increase well worth the effort of installing them.   The AMD download site has tons of options but if you perservere, you can find the linux download for the device, I'll post specifics later.   Once downloaded, you get the opportunity to build your own packages specific to your operating system. I built them for Ubuntu 32bit which was a bit fiddly with having to ...

Gizmo 2 - Out of the box

Posted by xever Apr 16, 2015
I have received my Gizmo 2 just before the Easter weekend.  Its arrival was perfect timing for me to see try out its capabilities out of the box and share that experience in this post.  There are already a few great reviews in this community who had earlier access to this wonderful single board machine, and I strongly recommend them as they are well worth the read.   What's inside the box? Upon opening the box, one will find: - The Gizmo 2 Single Board Computer inside the anti- ...
