What is ELV?

Posted by gnevison May 26, 2009
The European Commission (EC) End-of-Life-Vehicles (ELV) Directive aims to reduce the amount of waste from vehicles (cars and vans) when they are finally scrapped. In particular, it includes tightened environmental standards for vehicle treatment sites, requires that last owners must be able to dispose of their vehicles free of charge, and requires producers to pay all or a significant part of the free take-back. It also sets reuse, recycling and recovery targets and restricts the use of hazardou ...

Next batch of SVHCs

Posted by gnevison May 26, 2009
There have been many reports on how frequently future batches of Substances of Very High Concern will be published by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). A popular view is that they will be every 6 months commencing this summer, at a rate of 25 per year. However, the ECHA website provides a clue to the possible next steps. The necessary dossiers are currently being compiled on 12 SVHCs for submission during August. A further 2 have, as yet, no date against them. Allowing for consultation it is ...

The individual Producer registration fee is £680 then, finally, there will ...
From June 2009 the Marketing and Use Directive (76/769/EEC) will become Annex XVII of the REACH Regulations. The legislation, with its numerous amendments, imposes restrictions on hazardous substances. Some are already banned in the European Union, such as asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls and, as a result, they cannot be sold or used. Others are restricted from use other than in certain applications. There are restrictions on certain materials that are used in toys and others, such as t ...
Back in 2006 I can clearly remember the confusion around the RoHS status on Development Tools, or Semiconductor Evaluation Boards as the enforcement authorities referred to them. Manufacturers hoped, and many believed that they did not fall within scope. However, enforcement authority NWML in the UK concluded that most of them fell within category 3 - IT equipment. With the publication of the so called "RoHS2" proposals the question is again on the agenda. Here are some simple guidelines: R ...
We have received several questions recently, from around Europe, about the biocide Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF). On 1 May 2009 the European Commission banned products containing DMF from being placed on the market. Also, on the same date, any products already on the market had to be either withdrawn from the market or recalled from customers. A popular use for the substance is controlling mould, mainly in leather products. DMF has been found to be an allergic sensitiser at low concentration and can p ...
