Nanomaterials seems to have suddenly appeared as the latest "nasty" although there seems to be lot of poor and misleading

reporting of the issues.

Nanomaterials are simply materials with very small particles and are widely used in many products including sunscreen,

cosmetics, paints, etc.

Nanosilver is a biocide and has been used in washing machines, air con and vacuum cleaners. In the amounts used, it apparently

poses no risk to people although there are concerns that if it were to be used more widely, it could affect aquatic life and even

sewage works (as it is a biocide, it could kill the good bacteria that work on the sewage). I have recently seen it in biocidal hand

wash so it is increasingly used.

There are serious concerns that it is sold via the internet as a health aid and if consumed in larger amounts it could have long-term

health effects.

Carbon nanotubes show huge potential for novel technologies but so far there are very few applications. Super capacitors

and some types of electric motors seem to be the only uses. Carbon nanotubes are fibrous and research has shown that it

may have similar or slightly worse cancer properties tosilica but this does not appear to be conclusive.

Justification for a ban?

The proposal to ban these two substances may not have enough support and so could be dropped, we will have to wait and see.
