rohs directive components.jpgDiscussions on a list of new substances to be restricted under the RoHS2 directive 2011/65/EU will continue in October with the launch of a fourth consultation and third stakeholder meeting on four selected chemicals according to ENDS.

In late August, the European Commission confirmed that the inclusion of flame retardant HBCDD and phthalates DEHP, BBP and DBP would be discussed this autumn.

Expert Dr. Paul Goodman of ERA Technology advises that HBCDD will be "considered" because the RoHS directive says that it must be, but the conclusion will be not to add it to Annex II because it is already identified as a Persistent Organic Pollutant.

The rest of this study will be to carry out risk assessments, assessments of substitutes and socio-economic assessments which is a lot of work and the consultants will not have time to fully assess anything else such as other brominated flame retardants, halogen flame retardants and PVC that have all been proposed, in the remaining time available.
