The Radio Equipment Directive or RED (2014/53/EU) replaces the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment or R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC).

RED was first added to the Official Journal of the European Union in May 2014 and will enter into force on 13 June 2016 after a two year transition.

RED introduces obligations for importers and distributors of radio equipment.

Broadcast receivers are now included in the scope of RED.

Telecom Terminal Equipment which has no radio interface will no longer be in scope of the directive but instead will be captured under the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility or EMC Directive (2014/30/EU).
