The European Commission is planning a revision to the rules and extending the scope of spare part provisions that restrict their use in hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

Existing RoHS regulations provide for the use of spare parts up to 22 July 2019 but not beyond for new product categories covered by the legislation.

The Commission confirmed that certain new product placed on the market lawfully before that date would not be able to be repaired with spare parts beyond 22 July even though repair is desirable from an economic and environmental point of view.

The planned amendment, set out in a recent impact assessment, would update the list of spare part provisions to include new product categories therefore allowing their repair with spare parts.
