2014 saw a 4% increase in the collection of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compared to 2013.
The collection in 2014 was slightly below target mainly due to televisions and monitors falling some 23% year-on-year which probably reflects the end of cathode ray tubes being thrown out.
Unwanted electrical equipment is the fastest growing type of waste.
Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If we do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances can leak out and cause soil and water contamination that can harm wildlife as well as human health.
