*Update: The website upgrade has now been completed.  We hope you enjoy using the new features and if you need help or have questions feel free to post in Feedback and Support or @mention element14support

Greetings element14 Community members,

The element14 Community website has recently undergone some changes as part of a regular site upgrade every couple of years.

Questions about why we upgrade? See here.

This website upgrade is a combination of improvement suggestions we've received from you, fixes to reported issues, and brand new features to help you make better use of your membership here on the Community. To ensure a smooth transition, last month we asked a handful of members to try out the new site ahead of launch and let us know what they thought of it. Here’s what a few of them they had to say:

  • The improvements are really nice and make the site more useful. Good changes!”

  • “The updated profile page is excellent!”

  • “The drop down list for things like Topics work so much better on my tablet and much more responsive too!”

A very special thanks to all of those who participated in our beta program!

As of Sunday, January 24th, the website update has been completed.  Please report any issues with an @mention to element14support or post in Feedback & Support where our team will be ready and waiting to help you Monday-to-Friday. We hope you find these updates and new features easy and enjoyable to use on the Community to Connect, Learn, Create and Inspire!   Found an issue?  Check out the known issues log to see if your issue has already been reported.)

Your friends at element14 Community.

New Features and Updates

    • Your Profile: The layout to the profile area has changed quite a lot. You'll also notice a new feature, similar to LinkedIn’s skill endorsements, have been added so you can share your specific skills and expertise with others via your profile. See below for a comparison of the current profile page versus the new layout.

      • Old Profile:

      • New Profile:

    • Question & Answers: Members can now mark any open question that any other member has asked with “I have the same question

Also, other members can now mark responses/answers to a question as “helpful”. The more a question is marked as "I have this same question", the higher it will be returned in the search results for relevant content.

You'll also be able to search and filter now on questions that have helpful replies.

    • Your View: The Activity Stream and Inbox (which were previously part of the same area on the website) have now been separated. Your Inbox can still be accessed by clicking on the orange box at the top right of the site.

Activity can now be accessed by clicking on “Activity” at the top right of the site, which means you can access it in one fewer clicks than before.

In addition to the separation of the two features, you'll also see a new feature called “Your View” in the Inbox, which allows you to create a custom page to show the information that's most important to you. You can also make Your View, Activity or Inbox your default view when you visit the element14 Community.

    • Streams: In addition to the current feature of creating custom streams that follow places and people you care about, now you can also create streams with tags. Simply edit your current stream(s) to take advantage of this new feature on existing streams.

    • Design Look & Feel: Changes have been made to shorten the home page scroll, the navigational menus have been simplified, many of the page layouts have been cleaned up and refreshed, and you'll also notice an overall refresh of the design.

Content icon images have a new updated look:

new icons.png

    • Search & Filter: The main search box results will now return additional filters including Frequently Viewed and Recently Searched.

    • Qualified Content: Three new options (labelled as Official, Marked as Outdated and Has Helpful Comments) to search have been added. These three new filters have been added to improve your search results.

Search Official.png

When you see content marked "Official" on element14 Community you can be assured it is an official piece of content published by element14 Community. Likewise, old versions of content also can also be marked as "Outdated" so you know you're not looking at the most current version when you see this note on a piece of content.

Marked Official.png

Performance & Security Improvements: Some changes you might not notice in the design or as a new feature, but are                            improvements we think you'll welcome nonetheless.  Changes have been made to reduce the amount of code to improve the                      speed of page load times.  Additionally, we've implemented a switch to use HTTPS across the site that will strengthen                                  security/privacy of all members.

Mobile: element14 Community will now offer a responsive design which will make the website easier to consume and navigate on your tablet, mobile phone or any other different sized display. Rather than employing a separate "mobile" site, the upgraded will automatically adjust itself to any size or orientation of screen.

Hi element14 Community Members!

We're excited to introduce you to the next series of new badges to be made available on element14 Community!   This new set of badges is centered around you and the amazing expertise you share with each other every day.  When you respond to other members' questions every "Correct" and "Helpful" response you earn will be counted toward a badge that highlights those of you who have a specific niche of expertise.  To read more about earning points and badges on element14 Community see here.

These new badges will help you and your fellow members in the Community to find those who can help answer specific questions in Community terms of expertise.  The new badges, shown below, are now available for earning can be found in your Reputation Center under Missions.  Because these badges are reliant on others using the "Correct" and "Helpful" features to award others for their answers, here is a quick guide to answer any questions about how to mark your responses to your questions as "Helpful" and "Correct".  The best way to say "thanks" to your fellow members is to mark a good response as "Helpful" or "Correct" to help them earn their first expertise badge!  (Quick tip: Badges are not retroactive - meaning that credit for "correct" and "helpful" answers before the badges were made available (April 13th, 2015) in the Reputation Center can not be credited back to a member's account.)

To share feedback about the new badges or tell us what other expertise you'd like to see recognized, feel free to leave a comment below!

To access your Reputation Center you must be logged in to element14 Community.  Not Logged In?  Log In | Register

It's been a busy few weeks here on element14 Community!  We thought we'd take a minute to share some of the highlights and goings on in case you missed them.  Did we miss something cool that happened on the Community?  What happened with you that you want the Community to know about?  Share below in the comments...

The new model Raspberry Pi 2 was announced on Monday the 2nd!

Raspberry Pi 2

The Community welcomed a brand new area to showcase all the brand new information about the Pi 2!  There's been some great discussions started - check out the discussion tekmeister started asking if the new Raspberry Pi 2 hits the marksousuke121 shared pics in this discussion when he got his Pi 2.  javasound asked for help about connecting his Pi 2 using SSH via Putty - some great ideas and help from fellow members on how to solve his problem.  Join hundreds of other members for a chance to get a Raspberry Pi 2 to RoadTest - you have until the 2nd of March to apply so hurry and enroll now if you want a chance to win!

The latest Design Challenge, "Enchanted Objects" opened for enrollment on February 2nd - this particular Design Challenge asks you to make something ordinary extraordinary!  Some of the examples of projects are things like creating an interactive bookcase that can tell you where a specific book is located on the shelf.  Find out more about this Design Challenge and make sure to submit your applications to participate by March 8th!  The grand prize is a trip to the New York Maker Faire in September 2015.

Speaking of Design Challenges, the winners for The Internet of Holiday Lights were announced!  That's right, the winners, with an "S"!  The judges couldn't pick just one winner, so they picked two!  I'd like to join all of you in congratulating the winners peteroakes and ipv1!    Both winners won a Robox 3D Printer!  We can't wait to see what they create!

Last week kas.lewis got some excellent support from Joe at Tektronix when his RSA306 USB Spectrum Analyzer he was selected to RoadTest came to him in poor condition and missing parts.  After some help from doctorcdf and Tektronix he had this to say "WOW! I got the missing parts from Tektronix and I was VERY impressed. Not only did the person there (Joe) help like I wish every company would but he even included a handwritten letter apologizing for the missing parts, that alone was worth the package."  Read more about the reviews coming in about the Tektronix RSA306 USB Spectrum Analyzer here.

The BeagleBone Black Giveaway contest wrapped up on Friday last week and 20 members won BeagleBone Blacks to add to their workshops! We hope to see all of our new BeagleBone Black winners' projects in our BeagleBone Black area on the Community!

Reputation Center FAQs:

Q: Did I keep the same number of points from the previous points system?

A: Yes! Everyone keeps the same amount of points you collected before the launch of  the new Reputation Center.  If you think you lost points, please reach out to us in Feedback & Support.

Q: Did I change levels?

A: Most likely your level in the Community did change with the introduction of the Reputation Center.  This happened to everyone, so your rank will not have changed among your contacts and fellow members.  We made some changes to the total number of levels to improve the experience and points earning program for everyone.

Q: Where can I find more information about earning points and badges on the element14 Community?

A: Check out our full document on earning points and badges.

Q: Will I get credit for the activity I completed before the new Reputation Center was introduced on November 12, 2014?

A: A technical limitation will not allow the Reputation Center to recognize actions you completed before it was introduced.  There are some special badges that will be retroactive. (i.e. Member of the Month)

Q: I am not getting points for completing an action, is this an error?

A: Some of the actions you can earn points for have a daily limit set on them.   If you are not earning points for an activity you think you should be, please contact Feedback & Support or @mention element14support

Q: I didn’t earn a badge I thought I was supposed to earn.

A: If you think you didn’t earn a badge for a mission you completed, please reach out to us via Feedback & Support or @mention element14support.

Q: I have an idea for a new mission/badge, where can I share it?

A: We’d love to hear your ideas!  Feel free to share them in Feedback & Support!  Also, use the “like” feature to "vote" on the other ideas from your fellow members you’d like to see as well.

Q: I am having trouble seeing some of the features in my browser.

A: The Reputation Center works best in FireFox, Chrome and Safari browsers.  If you are having trouble, please try using the Reputation Center in another browser.  If you continue having trouble, please reach out to us in Feedback & Support.

Hello Members!

Soon we will be introducing a fun new feature that allows you and your fellow members to earn badges for completing key missions within the Community.  We hope that you enjoy the new challenge of collecting badges, completing missions and most importantly a way to showcase your accomplishments in the Community to your fellow members.   This new feature, called Reputation Center, will be available to you via your profile on a new tab called “Reputation”.

Please read below to see the details about the new features and let us know if you have any questions or comments, please share them below in the comments section.  We will be updating you again via announcements and blogs as soon as the Reputation Center is available to you to use.

Introducing the Reputation Center:

  • Number of levels:  Currently we have 0-15 levels with a point range of possible earnings of 0-10,001.  This will change to levels 1-9 with a point range of possible earnings 0-100,000.  Important note: While your current level may change, the number of points you have collected will not.

  • Earned Badges: Everyone will be given missions they can complete to earn badges that reflect their status, expertise or an accomplishment in the Community.  We will introduce a few missions to begin with, and we will continue to introduce new missions in the future.   If you have an idea for a new mission or badge, feel free to share it with us here.

  • Display of Badges: We are giving you a way to show off all the new badges you’ve earned, called “Me in Three”.  You can show off the three badges that best describe you to other members.  We encourage everyone to use the “Me in Three” feature so others can quickly identify your expertise and experience as a member.

  • Quick Access to Reputation Center through Welcome Drop Down:

  • Profile View:  On your profile bio your collected and available badges will be displayed for others to see along with your total number of points and level you’ve reached in the Community.

  • Reputation Center:  This is a place where you can view all of your unearned and earned missions and badges, see where you rank in points among your contacts and in the Community, and see your and your fellow members latest activity in regards to earning points, badges and completing missions.

    • Ranking:

    • Latest Activity:

    • Earned and Unearned Missions Available:
