The theme this month is Remote Monitoring & Control and comes from a suggestion by kk99 . If you're just getting started, check out A Maker Bro Video: ESP8266 Remote Monitoring and Control With MQTT Using Arduino and Cayenne to learn how you can build a device and control it using the Arduino IDE. This theme coincides with the 10th anniversary of the element14 community and you can receive an Arduino compatible board in the 10 Year Challenge | Tell Us What You Can't Live Without for an ESP8266, Arduino Uno, or Arduino Nano! You can work on any project that involves remote monitoring and control of devices that are not easily accessible. It does not necessarily have to involve radio communication, for example battery powered devices made to last as long as possible. Examples of projects you could build include water monitoring systems, smoke detection systems, remote battery charger, remote temperature monitors, remote plant monitoring systems, remote air quality monitoring, IoT CCTV cams that people can talk through, doorbells and cameras, Cams with dog feeders to give your dog a treat while you're at work, and more. e14phil who runs our Design Challenges is especially fond of The Cooker Connector from the Pi Chef Design Challenge, a BBQ system which regulates the smoker and BBQ temperature from a phone app while you out of the house. During the Mixing Electronics & Water there was also Social Plant Survival Kit by mbozdal , who built a plant watering device from when he was away, and Remote (Water) Temperature Monitoring by ntewinkel . During A Question of Scale , luislabmo built a Remote Home Monitoring with Raspberry Pi and Hologram Nova , that tracks power consumption to your most important appliances, monitors the stove temperature, and displays room temperature remotely.
Remote Monitoring and Control Systems are used for a number of industrial applications. It is used to control numerous large or complex systems facilities such as factories, power plants, network operations centers, airports, and spacecrafts, with some degree of automation. These systems receive data through sensors, telemetry streams, user inputs, and pre-programmed procedures. Software may be used to send telecommands to actuators, computer systems, or other devices. Remote Monitoring and Control in smart grids, positive train control (PTC) which is used to prevent collisions and accidents on railways, structural health monitoring in buildings and bridges, pipeline sensors, patient monitoring, and desktop/server monitoring.
