Keyboard in action (via Robofun Create)   The practical and impractical uses of the Raspberry Pi knows no bounds. The Robofun-Create team has created a keyboard that instead of emitting the classic ‘clacking’ sound of computer keys, it makes the sound of snapping open a cold brew. This is because the entire keyboard is made up of beer cans. Unfortunately, there’s no chance of you actually having the option to buy one, it was simply a demonstration at the 2012 Webstock Con ...
Want to build this project? View Parts   In my last post, I introduced the Pumpkin Pi: a Raspberry Pi project for Halloween.  It puts a Raspberry Pi inside a jack-o'-latern to provide web-controlled lights and sound: (click to enlarge; screenshot of latest version as of 2012-Oct-26)   The Pumpkin Pi software was written in Python with generous assistance from Bonnie King and can be found on GitHub under my account "pdp7" in the punkin_pi repository.     Install de ...
(entry for the 'Raspberry Pi Model B 512MB Challenge')   We have this old Underwood typewriter lying around the house.  It has a beautiful typing sound and weighs in at 29 pounds.  One of my many projects is to turn this baby into a “portable” computer that would mix current technologies like the Raspberry Pi and the classic look and feel of that old cast iron monster.     The general idea would be to individually link all the key striker arms into the Ra ...

Promotional development interface image (via Adafruit)   The Raspberry Pi is a powerful and affordable tool. However, for people new to Linux it can be difficult to unleash the full potential of the Pi. In a generous effort from the folks at Adafruit, they have created Raspberry Pi webIDE (Web Integrated Development Environment). The webIDE will make the Pi much more accessible and has been packed full of features and tools.     As the name suggests, the IDE launches and runs r ...

School of Information and Communications Technology Professor Chris Tyler (centre) holds up a prototype of the Raspberry Pi. Pictured with him are President David Agnew and Mark Adler, Member of Parliament, Riding of York Centre     The raspberry pi could make your own private world into a green, more earth-conscious paradise; programming it to manage your houses appliances and keep energy usage in check. But students and faculty from Seneca College in Toronto are working dilige ...
An exciting moment for me at Maker Faire this past weekend was spotting the Raspberry Pi Alamode.  Kevin Osborn had WyoLum's intriguing Raspberry Pi daughter board on display: It features an AVR ATMega328 just like an Arduino Uno.  The Alamode can be programmed with the Arduino IDE on the Raspberry Pi via the Pi's UART serial pins so a USB port doesn't have to be wasted.  Here it is atop a Pi in the Adafruit Pi Box (which is in convertible mode with its roof off): The Alamod ...
I picked this up recently. For anyone with a Raspberry Pi who is looking to revisit some Atari games or even play them for the first time, there is a perfect emulator available for the Atari 2600 console. With a little motivation, a Raspberry Pi B board with the latest Raspian image, and a USB gamepad or keyboard you can get right to hooking a system up for some old fashion gaming. Through the emulator "Stella" and some down-loadable video game ROMs all this is achievable.     ...
