Remote Monitoring and Control Systems are used for a number of industrial applications. It is used to control numerous large or complex systems facilities such as factories, power plants, network operations centers, airports, and spacecrafts, with some degree of automation. These systems receive data through sensors, telemetry streams, user inputs, and pre-programmed procedures. Software may be used to send telecommands to actuators, computer systems, or other devices. Remote Monitoring and Control in smart grids, positive train control (PTC) which is used to prevent collisions and accidents on railways, structural health monitoring in buildings and bridges, pipeline sensors, patient monitoring, and desktop/server monitoring.
When used for smart grids it can be used to control aspects of how electric power is demanded and consumed through the smart metering systems. It is often used to reduce electrical downtime, allowing electrical power monitoring and control systems (PMCS) to alert you to trouble remotely, without having to rely on alarms or flashing lights on-site. If the system has control capabilities it can take steps to restore power and preserve loads while you are analyzing the problem remotely. Remote monitoring and control applied to structural health monitoring allows you to monitor and track structures for wind and weather, traffic, and stress loads.
Remote monitoring and control systems are used in agriculture by farmers to gain better control and visibility of their irrigation systems, allowing them to make better decisions regarding water, chemical, and electrical usage. Data is collected through instrumentation located on different components of an irrigation system, the wireless telemetry system sends automatic and real-time status of water pressure, pump usage, pump water flow, and other critical parameters can accessed through a computer, smart phone, or tablet. This eliminates the need to travel to multiple locations and manually inspect motors and pumps. These wireless monitoring and control system can be configured to provide alerts on abnormal conditions, allowing technicians to quickly diagnose problems such as motor failures and pipeline leaks. This helps reduce water usage and electrical consumption. The telemetry system works with flowmeters to optimize the amount of chemical dispersed with water to prevent overdosing or under treating crop.
Remote monitoring can be used in trains for a number of things such as remote fuel level monitoring, exhaust and charge air temperature, remote cabin temperature monitoring, remote alternator temperature monitoring, remote battery charger temperature monitoring, remote air flow monitoring, remote vibration monitoring, and remote gear box temperature monitoring. When used for electrical construction and maintenance, remote monitoring and control systems are used to reduce electrical downtime. Known as electrical power and monitoring systems(PMCS), by alerting you to trouble remotely so you are not reliant on audible alarms or a flashing light.
Remote patient monitoring (RPM) allows patients to use mobile medical devices and technology to gather patient-generated health data (PGHD) and send it to a physician's office. Common physiological data that can be collected with RPM programs include vital signs, weight, blood pressure and heart rate. RPM is frequently used to help patients that require chronic, post-discharge or senior care. By connecting high-risk patients with remote monitoring, healthcare organizations can be notified of potential health issues or keep track of patient data between visits. Examples of remote patient monitoring technology RPM technology range from handheld medical devices to online platforms that allow patients to input data such as glucose meters for patients with diabetes, heart rate or blood pressure monitors, continuous surveillance monitors that can locate patients with conditions like dementia, alert a healthcare professionals of a fall, and caloric intake or diet logging programs.
