The Power and Thermal Design Process in Ultra96-V2

Description

This webinar will go through the design process used on Ultra96-V2 to define the power requirements and create the power architecture. We will then address the design of a custom thermal solution to allow operation at +85C.  The goal of this webinar is to teach you how to properly estimate the power requirements for your design, specifically when using programmable logic, as well as how to engage and design a custom thermal solution to meet your needs.

Designing the proper thermal solution around your product is critical to success. Just like power, thermal design is often left to the end. Unfortunately, most product reliability failures end up being the result of power or thermal issues,  due to the de-emphasis during development. While it might not be as flashy as the processor or radio selection, designing the power and thermal solution alongside the rest of the system is critical to getting the best performance out of it.  The Ultra96-V2 is by design a lower power platform so the mission was to design a passive thermal solution that could enable industrial temp operation and eliminate the fan for low temperature operation.

What You Will Learn By Attending:

  • How to estimate power requirements for your design
    • Specifically with programmable logic
  • How to engage and design a custom thermal solution to meet your needs

The Ultra96-V2 updates and refreshes the Ultra96 product that was released in 2018. Like Ultra96, the Ultra96-V2 is an Arm-based, Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ ™ MPSoC single board computer based on the Linaro 96Boards Consumer Edition (CE) specification. Ultra96-V2 is available in more countries around the world as it has been designed with a certified radio module from Microchip. Additionally, Ultra96-V2 is available in both commercial and industrial temperature grade options. Additional power control and monitoring is possible with the included Infineon PMICs.

The Presenter:

Chris Ammann, Global Technical Marketing Engineer, Avnet

Started my career designing equipment for telecom with a focus on power and harsh environments. Joined Avnet as a power specialist FAE, eventually moving on to a role with the Global team focused on power. I now support power and thermal design around all the Avnet designed products as well as work with manufacturers to create material that helps customers tailor power solutions to their end products.
