For a recent project it was decided to try to use hot air to solder just a part to a PCB. This is a quick post just to document how it was attempted - it is not "best practice".   Although reflow soldering was not really mandatory for the particular PCB, it was decided to try to attempt it for the large TO-263 device that needed heat sinking. This is non-trivial due to the amount of metal that needs heating, and the holes which will enable capillary action to occur for flux and solder. Thi ...
These days I have been trying my luck with surface mount components and wanted to give it a try building some boards. Also by playing around with the ESP8266. A while back I built a interface board to use the module with the Arduino, so now I wanted to make an independent board for the module. It has been done over and over on the web. Yes I know, but I haven't done it. I just put together a few components to give it a try. It consists of a usb to uart chip (CH340T) and an ESP8266 03 module. I b ...
Introduction This Battery Simulator project is intended to provide a way of testing small devices such as wireless sensor nodes that usually require a battery power source. For more details, check out part 1 by clicking here. After you've finished reading, click here for part 3.   This part 2 discusses some of the PCB layout (more details once the board has arrived and been tested!). Note: The board was not designed for production, and PCB layout engineers will take many different decisi ...

In my previous post Old meets new, the 1-Wire Weather Station on the SPARK Core. (part 3) the weather station transformed more and more into an  internet-of-things device. But we are still not satisfied with this local webserver approach were currently all kinds of fancy dashboards and data visualization  systems are available. Spark.io promised us an data visualization tool for Q4 2014, but unfortunately this is delayed to Q2 2015 (https://www.spark.io/features#dataviz). Therefore I s ...
fake, hacker phone towers (aka dirtboxes) put on planes (via Joao Carlos Medau/Flickr) Hold the phone! American's may have to return to communicating via carrier pigeon and hand-delivered mail as the US Defense Dept. and NSA have begun a new, secret method of spying on everyone, ahem.. I mean criminals (wink wink). There has already been knowledge of shady practices going on: taking the form of fake cellphone towers and 'stingrays'. This new device takes governmental cellphone hacking t ...

Internet of Things (IoT) – It’s in the media. Earlier this year, World Finance reported a $40bn price tag on Songdo – an IoT Smart City purpose-built by the government of South Korea.  For our element14 2014 community awards, IoT was voted as one of the top trending technologies in 2014.  We often talk about the Gartner prediction of 26 billion IoT-enabled devices in the world by 2020.  Well, that’s only 6 short years away.  So, need to get started qu ...

This is part one; click here for part 2. Reflow soldering of some of the components was covered in part 2.5. Part 3 covers some initial tests.   Introduction I purchased a product a while back which came with AA batteries that were rechargeable and afterwards I could see why; the product had terrible power consumption during power-off and the batteries discharged within a few weeks even if the product was not used. I contacted the manufacturer, and they claimed this was normal for their ...
In Old meets new, the 1-Wire Weather Station on the SPARK Core. (part 1) I described the motivation of the project. In Old meets new, the 1-Wire Weather Station on the SPARK Core. (part 2) the first steps of programming the SPARK Core and interfacing it to the 1-Wire bus are described. I showed how the bus was scanned, and temperature values measured, but output was only sent to the serial USB port. Not really an The Internet of Things approach. I will now first look at the possibilities to pres ...
Have you heard about Nerfinator ?   It’s safe to say that we all have fond memories of the ubiquitous Nerf gun. The low tech toy has been the inspiration for parents around the world to plead with their children to “take it outside.” Last week Freescale attended MakerFaire Romeand unveiled a decidedly high-tech version of the beloved toy that would catapult it to the top of any maker’s Christmas wish list.
