    ATMEL  ATAVRZUSBSTICK  AT86RF230, USB STICK

    pmkulkarni

      Hi,

Can you confirm me on the following technical information –

1.Does this USB stick support 6LoWPAN so that when it is connected to a PC, it shall act as a 6LoWPAN Edge router out-of-box? If not, is there any programming required, and if so what are the components required?

2.Does this USBstick work properly with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS, ContikiOS?

3.Can this stick be configured to act as a n/w sniffer? What all protocol level debugging – 6LoWPAN, IPv6 etc. can this support?

4.Related to point 1 – can it’s firmware be modified to make it act like a simple 6LoWPAN node and 6LoWPAN host (some minimalistic routing capabilities to support mesh networking). If not, do you have any other device which can support this functionality.

      Regards,

      PMK

Well the good news is you can do all you want to do. See http://www.atmel.com/Images/doc5131.pdf . But this is a physical device with the programming up to you. You will need to set the Pan id. You will need to implement the edge router. This is NOT a turnkey solution. It does all the packet level handling including FCS generation. the details are in the PDF above. pmkulkarni is this what you want?

              Hi Clem,

The information that you have given me is about the 802.15.4 transceiver which is useful for someone who is developing h/w for 6LoWPAN and would need to write the device drivers.

However, I am looking for a USB-6LoWPAN dongle which I can connect to my PC and configure my PC to act as a 6LoWPAN Edge router OR 6LoWPAN node. I  want to write small applications using this product (dongle) where I can send-receive sensor data using 6LoWPAN n/w and not delve into the intricacies of the transceiver chip. The actual product (USB-6LoWPAN dongle) is mentioned in the link - AVR RZ USB stick module.

To give an analogy, if we have USB-WiFi dongles, then I can connect it to the USB port of my PC and convert my PC (which does not have in-built WiFi support) into a Wi-Fi device. I am not really writing device driver or programming the WiFi chip, but instead using it to run my WiFi based applications. I am looking at this type of scenario with the USB-6LoWPAN dongle - I would like to convert my PC to act as a 6LoWPAN Edgerouter / 6LoWPAN node. I expect that the drivers for the same should already be present in the firmware of this USB-6LoWPAN device. Considering this in mind, would you let me know on the following -

1.Does this USB stick support 6LoWPAN so that when it is connected to a PC, it shall act as a 6LoWPAN Edge router out-of-box? If not, is there any programming required, and if so what are the components required? Do you have any firmware which I can directly write to the USB stick using PC's USB port with the stick acting as a USB memory device without the need for any additional h/w?

2.Does this USBstick work properly with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS, ContikiOS?

3.Can this stick be configured to act as a n/w sniffer? What all protocol level debugging – 6LoWPAN, IPv6 etc. can this support?

4.Related to point 1 – can it’s firmware be modified to make it act like a simple 6LoWPAN node and 6LoWPAN host (some minimalistic routing capabilities to support mesh networking). If not, do you have any other device which can support this functionality.

Hope this helps to give clarity to what I am looking for.

              Regards,

              PMK

              Hi Clem,

That was really surprising, from the information mentioned in the link for Atmel ATAVRZUSBSTICK - http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-67532/l/avr-rz-usb-stick-module#overview it was looking that it might support the features that I am looking for. In any case, could you let me know the uses of this USB stick?

Thanks for letting me know on the TI CC2531 kit, the link that you have given again points to the USB stick and I believe that you mention that it can support all the 4 points that I have put in the mail earlier.

The application note for TI CC2531 mentions the following - http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/swru221a/swru221a.pdf on Page 7

"The dongle comes preprogrammed with firmware such that it can be used as a packet sniffer device. For programming the device with other firmware an external ICE is needed. The SmartRF05EB 1 can be used to program the USB dongle."

                     Some queries -

              1.    By default it acts as a 802.15.4 packet sniffer, can it be configured as a 6LoWPAN Edge router and 6LoWPAN host (device)? Do you know any applications which are available at TI's site that can be used for the same?

              2.    It shall require an additional programmer the SmartRF05EB in order to program the USB, what is the cost of this?

              Regards,
