Incorrect user name in Inbox for messages coming from the EAGLE NNTP newsgroup feed

    rachaelp

So this one has been there for a long time and seems to have improved a little but there is still an issue. I just posted a reply on EAGLECentral.ca which propagates to here via the EAGLE NNTP servers and into the EAGLE support section. It used to be the case that it would show any posts coming across as being written by Cadsoft Guest, but correctly recognising the user if they had an E14 account and crediting them with points and I believe it would also show up correctly in the inbox. For the post I just made, it does correctly show my name as the post author, and correctly adds points, but when I look in my inbox is says "ANONYMOUS ANONYMOUS replied to label of symbols".

So it's more fixed than it was in that the message threads look correct now, but somethings still slightly off with how it is showing in the inbox.

      Best Regards,

      Rachael

Actually I just noticed that the OP of the post I mention above is also an E14 member and it's showing him as Cadsoft Guest in the thread so actually it's still not working correctly in that respect either.

          Best Regards,

Is this you trying to get the Exterminator badge?

The cadsoft -> e14 -> cadsoft gateway has a few complexities to it, and you are correct that when messages come in from cadsoft, it tries to tally that user against an e14 user.

I'm not aware of any issues with that lookup, but the way that code is hooked in is tricksy and fiddly, so it's entirely possible that a change we made elsewhere has affected it.

Can you give us a screenshot the next time you see it?

Well it's a bug, and as you say, it's not trivial and it's either in your code or Jive so by your earlier definition I think this would count?

Here is a link to the thread: https://www.element14.com/community/thread/60034/l/label-of-supply-symbols

The original poster, is an E14 member and it's showing him as Cadsoft Guest, although strangely it gets it right for my posts, except in the inbox where I show up as ANONYMOUS ANONYMOUS.

You piqued my curiousity And you know the age old adage of "if you want good support from someone technical, the best way is to explain something and leave them going 'what on earth?' "

So lets start with why the lookup works for you and not for femtotech as that's the easiest part to explain The cadsoft -> e14 gateway works by looking up on email address. Your email address over at cadsoft and your email address here match exactly, so it managed to work out that you were you. But femtotech has a different email address setup between cadsoft and e14, so it can't find him.

What is happening in your inbox is a bit more complex. The way that the gateway works is that it creates the message, and then looks for a user to match up, and updates the message with those details. It does this quickly and behind the scenes with a silent update (meaning no notifications are sent out about the update).

So what you are being notified about is the initial create. This notification will be about the post that was created without the user details on it - because the notification is being done between the initial create and the update for the user's details.

Fixing this would be a pain. The design is not one that lends itself to a simple tweak to set the user name on the initial create - were it that easy, it would have been coded that way in the first place! And with cadsoft having been sold, the future of the gateway isn't certain.

                        Good!

Ok so this part isn't a bug then.

So we are agreed that this is a bug?

I very much hope that the NNTP group, EAGLE Central and the EAGLE forums on here don't go away. To me it's part of more of a community than the new Autodesk EAGLE forums, plus their forum software is not as nice.... Maybe if Autodesk to decide to shutter the NNTP a clone of it should be create elsewhere so the existing EAGLE community can continue.

But this is still a bug though
