    Top 10 Members!

    dixonselvan

I was searching for this list and finally found it! Yes, the top 10 Element14 community members as of April 2018. They truly deserve the spot. Do you have any thoughts on this? Let me know in the comment section below.

There are few others too down the ladder who are helping and I don’t want to disapoint you. This top 10 list is just a list, your help is always appreciated. Keep contributing.

Yes I feel like light years away from the top members. But will try hard to reach them

                  Hi Dixon

You will be most happy if you ignore the points and just enjoy the journey. Learning, participating, encouraging, asking questions, and answering the questions of others is where the real fun lies. Further, the respect that you gain from others on the forum, for thoughtful accurate posts is not related to points. There are many members that have joined recently so their point levels are low but their excellent posts and depth of knowledge have earned them instant respect on the forum from me and everyone else. I dare say that you are one of the members that has earned the respect of the other members. Keep up the good work. I will save #6 for you as long as I can.

                    Hi Dixon,

I agree with John, try not to think about the points and just enjoy the participation. Your participation and contributions since you joined have been great, just keep going how you are and I'm sure you'll rise through the rankings quite quickly

                    Best Regards,

                        Hi rachaelp

Thank you for your kind words. I‘ll be the same and enjoy being here while learning.

I'd have to agree with rachaelp and jw0752 about not worrying about points.

Keep offering advise to others and contribute content, it is this that will improve your reputation, not how many points you have.

                              Dixon,

as a matter of fact, (been away for a while for personal problems but my mood was always with the members of this community) I think you hear always by us almost the same comments to this discussion. No matter if you search for the top 10, or 20, or more... The real value of us, I mean all of us including you, is the opportunity to have a well-organized place where we can "think-free" about any technical aspect, from products to competitors, from how-to build a space-ship to the right way to solder a resistor. The important point is being together seeing, making, learning and sharing.

After some years of membership receiving and giving support, I can say that I never saw a sole member unheard or unsupported. This is the great philosophy of this very special island.

                              Happy making. Enrico

                                  Hi Enrico,

Hope you are doing good now. Thank you for your insight of the community. Yes this really is a special island. I could have reached here when I did my bachelors! But still I am happy that I am here atleast now. Learning here is more than I did in my college.

                                  Regards,

I'm floating just within the top 30 - that top 10 spot requires some SERIOUS effort and output from those who reach those dizzying heights.

It's a target for all, aim at it and the worst you can do is miss. There are plenty around here to pick you up, dust you off and give you that push in the right direction again.

If you want to get on quickly, have a look and see what Gene's strategy is and copy it. Before I did the Music Box he was behind me, yet somehow he's zoomed past and is rapidly accelerating away (and that's in spite of all the work I put into a whole series of blogs).

The points system does not favour content creators. It's the typical social network behaviour that's promoted. A few likes scores better than a well written article.

This is a very social community.  The likes work both ways (points for the creator of content and for the liker), so I am not so sure that it is that biased.

When I first became active on element14 I was so warmly welcomed by a few of top contributors, that I followed them and watched how they have interacted with the group members (new and experienced).  I modeled my approach after theirs. This was a big change in approach for me as I have never embraced other social sites, nor would I have considered myself to be a social person (more of an introvert).  This has been a very liberating experience for me and also a lot of fun.  I have been working on creating more content, so maybe I too will develop and understanding of any biases in the system.

                                        Enjoy!

Well put genebren That sums up my participation - I don't click on likes on any other  forum, but here it adds to the forum's momentum, which I would like to encourage.

Content creation doesn't directly generate points proportional to effort, but I do get a big bump in spin-off points whenever I publish some content. If your content is good it generates more points - more comments and more likes.

It depends what you mean by content. If it is drawing people in, it mnight not be a bad thing - even encouraging people to read the forums and articles

In the case I was hinting at, three year old posts and other obscure things is not akin to encouraging participation.

I agree that sometimes I'm not aware of content until someone I'm following has liked, or commented, so yes its helpful .... sometimes.

Interesting that we have 270059 points separating 1 and 100.

I thought it would be much closer, so it's an interesting snapshot.

Out of curiosity I plotted the top 200, skipping to every 10th member to get a visual.  It surely takes a lot of time and effort to get into the top 20-25 and those that do are contributing high quality as well as quantity to the community. But there are any number of others on down the list whose contributions I have enjoyed greatly.

With Missions you require to complete a set of specific tasks in order to earn the mission badge. e.g. the 11 tasks will earn you the CodeBug badge.

With Places, you just accumulate points for activities you do in that place. I'm not aware of any prizes for gaining a specific number of points in any given place however. It appears just to give you an overview of where you have been most active on the site.

The "You haven't earned any badges here" message is a bit confusing as it appears to imply that you can earn badges by accumulating points, however instead it just appears to be a place for displaying related mission badges.

Perhaps keep in mind that the Jive platform used to host the Element14 site can be configured in many different ways depending on the specific community requirements. The Places section is probably used slightly differently on other community sites compared with how it is used here on Element14.

I suspect you could base a task required for a Mission badge on the Place score in such a way that one task requires you to accumulated a specific number of activity points in that Place. Some sites may use this to encourage people to participate in areas which currently have a low amount of activity.

If you click on Missions on the left, it lists all the different badges that you can earn, and their points, and tracks how close you are to fulfilling those missions. If you click on the bottom right of each of the badges they turn over and reveal more details on the different activities necessary to earn those badges, and which ones you have already done. I hope that helps you snidhi - then it also becomes easy to see what courses are on offer, etc, and how you are progressing through them.

Perhaps I should join in the next design challenge and ignore the family who claimed they would change the door locks if I did!

I am fairly sure all our members have a smartphone that could be used to interact with a bluetooth doorlock... and there may be possibilities to tie it to an email if it can be delivered instantaneously, or as a back-up mechanism to alert a member that someone reported to be them has unlocked the bluetooth lock using what appears to be their smartphone... So definitely an interesting project, for domestic/garage and club/makerspace use...

But anyway "points don't mean prizes"* but just a nice personal scoring thing I feel, since we all started at different times.. i..e. you can watch your number go up, and more activity speeds it up, but no point comparing since it doesn't result in anything, and everyone is more active and effective that others in at least one thing! For example the list of best videos, most creative and imaginative projects, most unusual applications, most fun projects, would all be different., so no matter how it was scored, and if we all started at the same time, the result scoreboard would be very different each time.
