          I'm trying to setup a raspberry (Model B Revision 2.0) with the wolfson audio card (rev A02). I'm not sure if the drivers in the lastest Raspbian are compatible with that hardware. Following the directions from RPi Linux driver for Wolfson / Cirrus Logic Audio Card  I cannot get aplay to play a wav file (which does work through the pi jack or hdmi). The error I get is:

          aplay: pcm_write:2011: write error: Input/output error

            The Wolfson card should work just fine on the old RPi (with 26 pin GPIO and pads/pogo-pins for the I2S signals), I'm regularily testing recent kernels for such a setup.

             

            Your configuration also looks fine, but the "DMA ransfer could not be terminated" indicates that there might be a contact problem with the pogo pins - which was a rather common problem.

             

            Try cleaning the P5 pads on the RPi where the pogo pins contact to and also the pogo pins (alcohol and a q-tip usually do the trick). Also make sure the pogo-pins are aligned nicely and make good contact with the pads.

              Is it possible to play via alsa to AIF1RX3 - AIF1RX8 ? I'm only able to send to AIF1RX1&2. I could need it to route the sound with crossover ladspa plugin to headphones, and Room correction ladspa plugin to speaker (AIF2TX1&2). Looks like the driver is missing some Subdevices (has only 1),as the card would support it. Is there a change to get that in future.

                Technically it's possible to use AIF1RX1-AIFRX8 (by using TDM mode with 8 slots), I used that as a test while developing the DSP / TDM mode implementation I made in the bcm2835-i2s driver.

                 

                But there are some rather severe limitations which reduce it's practical usefulness:

                 

                The bcm2835 I2S hardware can only transmit 2 channels. So you have to choose which 2 out of the 8 slots / RX interfaces to use.

                 

                Switching the slot configuration can only be done when the I2S hardware is idle. So, for example, if you have a recording running you can't choose another configuration for playback - you have to stop recording first.

                 

                Given these limitations it's not worth the hassle to extend the card driver. If you just want easy access to eg "lineout only" / "headphone only" you can do that via an alsa card conf (in /usr/share/alsa/cards) that exposes separate PCMs and (temporarily) sets the WM5102 alsa mixer controls on-the-fly.

                This is the alsa card conf we use in LibreELEC to expose an IEC958 (S/PDIF) PCM. By default the card is configured to output sound to line out, headphone out and S/PDIF out, if you use the IEC958 PCM line out, headphone out and speaker out are muted and the S/PDIF out is setup to unity gain (0dB) so compressed AC3/DTS streams can be transmitted via S/PDIF but won't reach the analog outputs - undecoded AC3/DTS streams would sound like ugly noise and could even damage speakers or your ears.

                 

                Changing the WM5102 (output) mixer controls on the fly works fine, so you can even do that when you have a recording running.

                    Well I have moved over to a rather fine Marantz amp  ......... which 30 seconds after end of play starts letting out a nasty mains hum. It seems that it is much less tolerant than my old amp of its inputs going open circuit.  I presume that this is due to the sound card being put into standby (via DAPM?). Despite several experiments I have failed to find out which module / parameter needs to be hit.  Is this something that your driver does, or does it sit in the wider system?

                    More generally for those that are interested,  the PCB I fabricated up last year still works fine, despite my fears about surface oxidation of the copper.  However I will be moving over to the ribbon cable approach that I mentioned when I build my Quad clone ...... which my wife tells me should be after I have built our bedroom :-(

                      This is very odd, never had such an issue. Does this also happen if you select an unused input on the amp? Maybe something's coupling into the audio cable from the soundcard to the amp?

                       

                      There's the pmdown_time module parameter of snd-soc-core which controls how long the outputs will be active after the sound device has been closed. But the default is 5000ms which doesn't quite match your 30 seconds...
