The final part of my the tools from my prize winnings that has not been reviewed yet is the soldering station. Originally, they intended to include the Multicomp Pro MP740139 80W ESD Safe Soldering Station, however, this turns out to be a 120V-only product with no direct 230V-equivalent at the same power level or price point. As a result, I was permitted to choose an alternative, of which there were not many to choose from. I settled on the Tenma 21-21310 UK 80W Soldering Station with UK Plug li ...
The next product from the prize bundle to be subjected to my stringent critique is the Multicomp Pro MP730026 3.75-digit handheld Bluetooth Low-Energy-enabled digital multimeter. This unit is listed at a price of US$38.57 through Newark and AU$77.98 inc GST through element14 Australia, with a special promotional price bringing this down to AU$59.87 inc GST which also qualifies for free shipping. This multimeter offers a 600V CATIV and 1000V CATIII safety rating, 6000-count autoranging display, w ...
I'm on a roll and it's the weekend, so why not do another review, this time of the Duratool D03288 Fume Absorber and Fan, currently listed at AU$68.97 inc GST for the UK plug version as delivered. This was the specific model that I received in lieu of the Multicomp Pro unit that was originally in the tool bundle as that one is 120V-only and I live in a 230V country, so the folks at element14 were nice enough to let me choose a more suitable unit in the same price bracket. Incidentally, those mod ...
The next items I decided to review from the bundle of stuff I received were the two Multicomp Pro Screwdrivers - the MP700130 12-in-1 Ratchet Screwdriver Set (currently US$11.99 or AU$33.62 inc GST) and the MP700124 11-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver Set (US$10.99 or AU$26.08 inc GST). My review will quickly look at the various bits that are provided and what I think about their design and value for money. Off the bat, however, it can be seen that there is a significant discrepancy in prices for the ...
From my recent prize haul, the first items to be reviewed are the two Multicomp Pro MP700136 and MP700151 Wire Cutter/Crimper/Stripper tools, both of which are available from Newark for a relatively inexpensive US$13.99 and US$11.49 respectively at the time this review was published. Interestingly, they are not available via element14's Australian site (my home site), so to have these in my hands feels somewhat special.   Readers may already be aware that Multicomp belongs to a series of e ...
The COVID-19 situation has thrown the whole world into a loop - myself included. In mid-March, I was supposed to begin a month-long holiday but that plan fell right apart after just eight days overseas, as the Australian government implored all its citizens to return home ASAP. Being the lucky person that I am, I made it to home quarantine on the final day before state border closures amongst other new restrictions.   But before leaving on holidays, I was the lucky recipient of "Giving Gif ...
Acoustics Enter Your Electronics & Design Project for a chance to win an $200 Shopping cart of product! Back to The Project14 homepage Project14 Home Monthly Themes Monthly Theme Poll   I'll be the first to admit ... perhaps this music from a power supply thing has gotten a little out-of-hand. First, I played a poor rendition of the Mario theme. It was a proof-of-concept, not really intended to go anywhere but perhaps to bring a smile to people's faces. Then I played a better rendi ...

Back to The Project14 homepage Project14 Home Monthly Themes Monthly Theme Poll   Since I posted my first version of making music with a power supply, it seems there has been some interest in the topic. Unfortunately, not all of it necessarily that positive. I understand ... art is a little bit like that ... sometimes it's hard to appreciate.         ...
Acoustics Enter Your Electronics & Design Project for a chance to win an $200 Shopping cart of product! Back to The Project14 homepage Project14 Home Monthly Themes Monthly Theme Poll   My holiday may be looming, but actually, after seeing the relatively positive response to my last quick project which looked at abusing a Rohde & Schwarz RTM3004’s arbitrary waveform generation features to produce audio, I thought it might be a good idea to up the ante somewhat and go even ...
Acoustics Enter Your Electronics & Design Project for a chance to win an $200 Shopping cart of product! Back to The Project14 homepage Project14 Home Monthly Themes Monthly Theme Poll   Even though I’m about to leave on a month-long holiday, I decided to spend a little time to put together a short project for element14’s Project 14 Acoustics Challenge. I was inspired by a Christmas video where someone used an oscilloscope’s arbitrary waveform generator to play a C ...
In this section, I will focus on the internals of the DAS240-BAT main unit and channel module to uncover what powers this multi-channel recorder and what the unit looks like under the hood, both hardware and software.   Disassembling the Main Unit Surprisingly, the main unit is held together mostly by using plastic rivets which makes disassembly very easy. Removal of the plastic rivet is done by prying on the head, removing it, then removing the collar from the hole. Once all of the plas ...
In this chapter, we will put the B&K Precision/Sefram DAS240-BAT Multi-Channel Recorder through some tests which are relevant for field usage and simulate potential use scenarios.   Battery Life One of the key parameters of interest would be battery life, especially as there may be some missions where the recorder may be on a remote site without access to reliable power or is not allowed to consume power as that may affect the validity of the test.   Battery life was tested with t ...
This chapter is concerned with instrument performance, perhaps one of the most important metrics of test and measurement equipment. It involves in-depth testing of power consumption, charging current profile, analog channel accuracy, digital timing channel accuracy, digital logic channel thresholds and alarm output latency. This section is very time-intensive, especially when analysis is concerned.   Power Consumption & Charging Profile The DAS240-BAT is powered from a 15V 4.5A power su ...
This section goes into depth regarding the various remote control and network access features of the DAS240-BAT, including the bundled software.   Ethernet (LAN) or 802.11b/g
Wireless (Wi-Fi) Option For remote control access, the DAS240-BAT offers an inbuilt 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet interface via an RJ-45 socket on the rear panel. While there are USB-A host connectors for connection to devices, the device does not offer a USB-B device-side connection for remote control.   Instead, it i ...
In this chapter, I will cover various aspects related to the user experience of the DAS240-BAT, including build quality, ergonomics, user interface, capabilities and documentation. Testing was performed with the shipped Firmware V2.0 and the downloadable Firmware V2.2 dated October 2019 from the Sefram Software Update page.   Build Quality My initial impression of the DAS240-BAT is that it is a solid, chunky-feeling unit that looks set for field usage with a few potential weak points. Holdi ...
