Recent studies say that about eight million autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles will drive to their destinations by 2025, which is a mere 5 years away. Driver assistance technology not only protects the occupants of the car, but it also saves the lives of pedestrians and other drivers. Future commuters will enjoy minimal traffic congestion, reduced vehicular pollution, absence of parking issues, and lower transportation costs.
How automated is your own vehicle? The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International classification system defines six driving automation levels, beginning from Level-0 (no automation and a fully engaged driver while driving), to Level-5 (full autonomy without any human driver). Lower systems warn you of an impending accident, while the highest two take proactive action to avoid such untoward incidents actively.
If innovation keeps going at the pace it is in the not too distant future, fully automated vehicles will perhaps be as numerous as stars on clear night. But are you ready for it?
