The main part of this review is covered in the two linked blog posts. I looked at a basic getting started and then more detail as to the power control.
The chip has a number of technologies that help with the power consumption, there is basic standstill powerdown, current sensing and the coolstep feature. This last feature requires some tuning to optimise the configuration but then will dynamically step the current up and down depending on the load on the system. Once the motor driver is configured then the control software only needs to worry about the direction and steps with the rest handled by the driver chip.
I had intended to complete some testing on a smaller motor but 2020 put my plans on hold.
