Arrival, un-boxing and first impressions<br />After a very lengthy delay at customs, the Keithley 2450 arrived safe and fairly well packaged - which appeared to be aided by the numerous documents attached to the box’s top and sides. The box had previously been opened, presumably whilst held at customs, but I was pleased to see that the content appeared to be complete with all supplied parts (listed below), and most importantly,undamaged. Below is our review of the Keithley 2450 SMU. We decided to do the review differently then most reviews: we put together a panel of 3 people, and all three had hands on time with the 2450. We thank Element14 and Keithley for the opportunity to evaluate a piece of equipment that we could not have afforded, but that turned out to be very useful in testing components and hardware designs such as analog to digital converters. If you are not familiar with the basics of a Source Measure Unit (SMU) here is Keithley’s What is a SMU? The Keithley Low Level Measurement Handbook PDF. on pages 1-8 and 1-9 show why Keithley is calling this a SourceMeter® SMU Instrument since it has both “Source Measure Unit” (SMU) and “Source Meter® Instrument” features. The 2450’s Source Meter® Instrument attributes are; directly displaying resistance and power and only having a >10GΩ sense input impedance (a SMU typically has >100TΩ sense input impedance).
