Electronics legislation - how can we help?

    VictoriaJones

There's no denying it - the world of electronics legislation is complex.

Deciphering 800+ page legislative documents is a daunting task, especially when you factor in the regular updates that accompany them. The aim of the legislation portal, unique to element14, is to share this bulk of information in a coherent and concise way - so what we'd like to know is:

What else can the element14 legislation portal do for you?

If your idea is about providing alternative content or a different format of presenting information - we want to hear from you!

A flow chart of what may and may not be applicable to a product would be very useful.

I've yet to see a simple list of of global legislation relating to electronic products.  Takes a lot of time to piece all that together then figure out what is and isn't relevant.  A simple country by country list of WEEE, RoHS, REACH, etc. legislation for the globe would be incredible.

Certainly within the EEA, but CE doesn't tell me much beyond the community, correct?  Have I missed something?

Yes the CE mark applies to the EEA countries as well as a couple of others, Norway Switzerland etc. TO have soemthing that covered this market (as the prime home market for I guess most farnell customers an aid to the relevent legislation would be very helpful.

I am currently working on a project to develop a specialised PC based application requiring a mixture of soft and hardware the hardware apart from a small PCB i have deisgned is all off the shelf CE compliant equipment available in the EEA and specifically UK market. WE will however it seems be required to put the device through tests for EMC and potentially electrical safety tests in order to sell a single a unit even with a healthy profit margin we would need to sell many units just to cover the cost of the compliance testing. As we plan to manufacture in the UK in small initial and hopefully larger ongoing quantities (securing Jobs, GDP etc) the lack of support from central and local government is astonishgly bad!

So any help in demistifying the requirements to comply with the tonnes of legilation without spend ££££££ on consultants would be great!

                              Thanks Victoria,

What I’ve found hard to find (and am now working on creating on my own) is a document that lists out legislation globally that affects electronic products.  I know there are services out there that offer discussion of laws etc, but I’ve yet to see just a simple list.

I also really like the map put together by B2BWEEE 9 http://www.b2bweee.com/requirements and something like that globally, that just pulls up the names of legislation electronics companies should know in any given country, would be fantastic.

I know this is a pretty huge project, and I intend to license my list under the Creative Commons open license when I’m finished so people can update and improve it.

                              Thanks,
