Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
GreenYamo May 12, 2012 9:06 AM (in response to wallarug)Fergus, have you tried the rest of the Help wiki ? http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Sound
cd /opt/vc/src/hello_pi/hello_audio
make
./hello_audio.bin
Not sure what you are trying to play, but Quake sound doesn't work and I couldn't get it to play MP3 files, I think because it probably doesn't have mp3 drivers as default, although just looking at the forum, the modprode command is supposed to cure that.
What are you trying to play and can you hear anything through headphones ?

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
wallarug May 12, 2012 7:54 PM (in response to GreenYamo)I am trying to get any sound possible through the HD TV but can't. not even ...
cd /opt/vc/src/hello_pi/hello_audio
make
./hello_audio.bin 1
... is working through the TV. But I can get audio through the audio jack when I type "./hello_audio.bin 0" .
I have read through the wiki but nothing seemed to help fix the problem.
I am not sure if the modprobe command worked but I think it did (I typed it in and no errors occured).

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
coder27 May 12, 2012 1:13 PM (in response to GreenYamo)Steve,
Does your unit have a CE/FCC mark?
In message #12 of this thread:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/troubleshooting/kernel-panic-not-syncing-attempted-to-kill-init
there is a photo (the last one) of what appears to be a sticker with a CE mark,
but no FCC mark, on the back side of a unit from RS.

Have you the suggestions in this thread ?
http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5062&p=67263&hilit=dvi+hdmi+force#p67263
I think you are correct in that the TV is registering the Pi as DVI rather than HDMI.
If none of that works, perhaps you could dump the EDID file in the same thread and see if Dom can help you as he seems to be the expert on this topic over on the Pi forums.
@Coder: Been away this weekend so will check when I am back and let you know re FCC/ CE mark.

Thanks for the pic. I was hoping we would have something definite
to distinguish boards made pre-compliance from post-compliance,
but apparently we are left with subjectively evaluating solder joints
looking for evidence of hand soldering, taking care not to be confused
by the look of lead-free solder.

wallarug May 18, 2012 1:34 AM (in response to wallarug)Ok, I have updated the config.txt file but with not luck. I ran tvservice -m CEA and worked out that my TV can run at 1080p60. This means that it should work. Can someone please explain what is going on.
Note: Config.txt:
hdmi_group = 1
hdmi_mode = 16
hdmi_drive = 2
Is something wrong here?
Also, I edit the config.txt file using "nano /boot/config.txt" then close it by using "ctrl + o" then "enter" then "ctrl + x"
Is something wrong here?
Should I be placing the file in the /boot/ directory from a different device?
Please help as I woud like to have sound and full HD output ASAP.
Thank you.

GreenYamo May 20, 2012 10:17 AM (in response to wallarug)Hello Fergus,
Might be a good idea to start again. I'm no expert, but your config.txt looks OK to me. If you are gonig to re-install, get the latest debian squeeze image from the Foundation's download page as that solved a few problems for me.
If all else fails, I would try and post a message over in the foundation's forums, there is someone over there called Dom who appears to be Broadcom's HDMI guru. Post your edid file there and hopefully he will show up and help.

GreenYamo May 22, 2012 6:47 AM (in response to wallarug)Hi Fergus,
I was fiddling around with trying to play an MP3 at the weekend, and couldn't get it to work, until I tried the instructions on this page http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4958&p=61894&hilit=alsa+mp3#p61894 second post down.
After a re-boot, the included Debian sound player actually played my mp3 files. Didn't have much chance to test it further, as I had firmware flashing problems on another device !
Hope this helps a bit ?

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
wallarug May 22, 2012 7:12 AM (in response to GreenYamo)I started from scratch and had no luck. I will try and get in contact with Dom on the other forum. I am not sure if the config.txt file is being recognised or ingnored. So I have attached a video of my boot sequence. Can someone let be know if something is wrong or unusual.
What's strange about this is that I can get full 1080p resolution when the TV is connected to my PC but not when the Raspberry Pi is connected; this tells me that it must not be the TV causing issues but the Raspberry Pi (or software).

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
GreenYamo May 23, 2012 8:23 AM (in response to wallarug)Hi Fergus, what are you trying to get sound from, that may also help also.
Is it an mp3 file, are you playing a game etc ? The boot sequence looks OK, but it is a bit blurry to begin with and my eyes are a bit blurry anyway :-) I'm also not a Linux expert, still very much on the noob level.
Knowing what you are trying to do may help.

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
wallarug May 24, 2012 2:41 AM (in response to GreenYamo)Hey Steve,
Exactly what I am doing:
Trying to get any sound over HDMI/through TV. As another issue: get the Raspberry Pi to register the TV as a HDMI device that supports 1080p60 (currently it is registered as a DVI device, us many know, it does not support Sound through the TV).If I can get 1080p @ 60Hz resolution, It may fix the sound issue as well because then the TV would be registered as a HDMI device NOT DVI.
If that makes sense.

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
coder27 May 26, 2012 11:09 PM (in response to wallarug)Fergus,
The raspberrypi troubleshooting forum is really the best way to
get in touch with Dom. He doesn't participate here. You've
apparently tried that, but can't post there for some reason,
possibly their spam blocker.
Quite a few other people who have had similar difficulties posting
have mentioned that on twitter:

and Liz has solved the problem by whitelisting them.

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
coder27 May 27, 2012 10:09 AM (in response to wallarug)Fergus,
I see your posts at rpi.org are appearing, so that's progress.
The title of the thread you posted in says "[solved]", so maybe it
would be worthwhile to start a new thread, of course with "HDMI trouble"
somewhere in the title, and include your edid file if possible.
Dom Cobley works for Broadcom in Cambridge, so if nothing else works,
you could try your luck with Broadcom's switchboard, but I would use
that only as a last resort, since he has been quite responsive in the
troubleshooting forum, including the thread you posted in.

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
wallarug May 28, 2012 4:39 AM (in response to wallarug)All fixed (audio + resolution)
Instuctions for others who may be experiencing the same issue with a TV and the Raspberry Pi:
1. Install a fresh image
2. start-up the Raspberry Pi and let it set itself up (normal set-up)
3. After you have gone through normal set-up:
a. Log-in as a normal user (debian image: pi)
b. Type the command: "sudo nano /boot/config.txt "
c. Press enter
d. Type in: "hdmi_drive=2 " [exactly as it is here]
e. Then press crtl + o
f. Press Enter
g. then press crtl + x
4. Restart using the command: " sudo shutdown -r now "
That gets the Raspberry Pi to register the TV as a HDMI device. You now have sound! For different resolution:
5. After you have gone through normal set-up:
a. Log-in as a normal user (debian image: pi)
b. Type the command: "sudo nano /boot/config.txt "
c. Press enter
d. Type in: "hdmi_group=1 " [exactly as it is here]
Press Enter
Type : "hdmi_mode=x " where x = corresponding number of resolution mode. See: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5851
e. Then press crtl + o
f. Press Enter
g. then press crtl + x
6. Restart using the command: " sudo shutdown -r now "
Now you have desired resolution and Sound!!!
Happy Raspberry Pi...ing

Yay!
> Adding to above, every time you start-up the RPi, you have to type (before startx): sudo modprobe snd-bcm2835
You can automate this by adding this command to your ".login" file, which is a file in your home directory with the name .login (note the initial dot). Every time you log in, the commands in this file get automatically executed. If the file doesn't already exist, you can create a new one. The purpose of the dot is to hide the file when you do a normal directory listing.
> Can someone tell me how to install vlc and vnc onto the raspberry pi. I've gotten this far: apt-get install [what comes next?]
vlc isn't gpu accelerated, so wouldn't be expected to work. The only way I know of to get video is with omxplayer or xbmc.

You can automate this by adding this command to your ".login" file, which is a file in your home directory with the name .login (note the initial dot). vlc isn't gpu accelerated, so wouldn't be expected to work. The only way I know of to get video is with omxplayer or xbmc.
Can you give more detailed intructions for creating the .login file. for example: is the file called: ".login.txt" or just ".login". When I created the file, it did not load the command: "sudo modprobe snd-bcm2835"
-
Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
GreenYamo Jun 4, 2012 9:46 AM (in response to wallarug)Fergus, I don't know if you are aware. but dot files in Linux mean they are hidden. To see if you already have a .local file, enter ls -a (list, show all)
However, try as I might, I could not get the .login file to work, the command from within that file would never load the sound module (lsmod command to check if it has been loaded) for me, hopefully Coder will pop along at some point and let me know what I was doing wrong!
I did however manage to add it to the profile file: sudo nano /etc/profile - copy 'sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835' (note underscore, not dash) and paste it at the end of this file (be careful not to alter anything else) save out this file and then re-boot, everything should be working, or at least it was for me.

Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
coder27 Jun 4, 2012 10:13 PM (in response to GreenYamo)Steve & Fergus,
Sorry for the bad advice on .login. I've used that for a long time
on other linux systems, but just now learned that it only works for
certain shells, such as csh.
A better way to do it is to add the line:
snd_bcm2835
to the end of the file: /etc/modules
(after the line that says: vchiq)

wallarug Jun 7, 2012 5:50 AM (in response to coder27)Thanks coder27,
Added the line to /etc/modules and sound now works nicely in GUI. but the sound does not work on Quake3 (I think I am missing the sound files though - any idea where to get them.)
. I followed this guide EXACTLY: http://myraspberrypiexperience.blogspot.com.au/p/quake3.html so that should help you determon whether or not I have the sound files.
Have any of you worked out how to print using Debain Squeeze? I want to print to a (somewhat) shared printer.
-
Re: How to get sound over HDMI working when using a TV?
coder27 Jun 7, 2012 9:43 AM (in response to wallarug)Fergus,
Apparently, nobody has Quake3 working with sound.
There is a mention on this thread:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1139
of a workaround for sound on x86 architecture which perhaps
could be used as a starting point for the RPi.
It is a bit unfortunate that the RPi publicity was not
clear about the caveats: Quake3, but not with sound;
Midori on Debian, but not with youtube, etc.
They even showed video of a keyboard and mouse
sharing a USB port (using a PS2 adapter), with a
USB hard drive on the other USB port, which
apparently is not as easy to get working as it looked
without a powered hub.
Sorry I don't know anything helpful regarding printing.

I have tried everything I could find on the internet but nothing has worked. I have a HD TV and the Raspberry Pi is connect through a HDMI cable. I have tried to change the config.txt file with hdmi_drive=2 (didn't work) and tried nothing in config.txt, I have tried sudo modprobe snd-bcm2835 as well but nothing I do seems to be working. I installed vlc but it gives me an error: "VLC failed to initlalize your sound output device (if any). Please update your alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue". The help on the Raspberry Pi Forums is not very helpful...Example: "yep, got it playing videos, video games, and just plain music".
