What rating power supply is recommended for the Raspberry Pi and camera?

            I am using a unit that supplies 2A @ 5.0V.

Thanks Ben, the supply I have will be fine then

To be honest the 1A unit is more than good enough for this application. I don't envisage any problems even with all the project hardware in use even with the WIFI and PIFACE after ball that is basically a 16x2 LCD and Switches

Please note that you will need to put the Pi and the PiFace in the case separately as you will need to align each board in to the slots cut in to the case for it. Be particularly careful when putting the Pi Face in so as not to damage either the tactile switches or the selector switch at the top as they can be a bit fragile and the case is under a bit of pressure whilst you pop it in to the top slot

Thanks for the heads up, and for letting us know *before* we get them

Two other things to note is that the moulding on the micro-usb power lead can catch the case and be rather awkward on some models of supply, also there is no cut out for the camera in this case so you will need to cut this your self.

It's OK just fiddly.. The carbon fibre effect looks cool though!

                          John

Do you have any heads up abut the dispatch of the goods.

Being on the far side of the world, I'm curious if Santa or the goods will arrive first.

I'm thinking an overnight order for the Pi Face Controller (via the NZ site), to ensure Xmas day doesn't get delayed might be in order.

                          Cheers

Obviously I do not work for E14 but I did ask for you and it seems it will be coming (or ready gone from) the US site so in fact customs aside it should be with you very soon(Courier speed at least).

The Pi Face is quite a nice interface so maybe you could order one for you own projects use it for this one then replace it with the one from the kit latter on ?

Apparently they have moved my "Unboxing" video in to public circulation so you can see what you are going to get when it arrives:

It will help identifying the case.

For those lucky people waiting for their Santa Kit, mine was delivered yesterday.

Could the element14 staff provide tracking information to them? Normally on review kit we get status updates mailed to us.

Gotta do a school run and then it's time to play!

Check in the bottom of the Anti-Static bag mine wasn't that visible.

Failing that probably the quickest way to get you going is to download it from the Raspberry Pi site and install it on to a fresh SDCard.

You will need to refer this back to Christian, but as I said it may well be easier in the short term to obtain a generic 8GB SDCard and using the link above create your own Noobs install.

                                                gregoryfenton

I have installed noobs but the camera does not work.

Apparently there is a known issue since one of the latest updates that causes issues between the i2c bus and the 1-wire bus which unfortunately affects the Raspberry Pi camera.

As it stands, the camera will not work out of the box until the fix is found and the bug eradicated.

The issue is with the software rather than the hardware and it would be unfair of me to base a review on the issues caused by software when a fix is undoubtedly being worked on.

I will revisit this review periodically to check if the issue has been resolved, at which time Santa will be summoned from the North Pole.

                                                  Hi,

So sorry for the issues your experiencing...Did you get the Noobs memory card? I have forwarded this email to the Tech team in hopes of getting some direction or relief...Thanks very much for your patience.

                                                    gregoryfenton

I definitely don't have the included SD card.

I have installed noobs on one of my spare SD cards, enabled the camera in raspi-config; done apt-get update; apt-get upgrade and rebooted.

For a noob this is as far as they would get before they found out that the kit does not work and give up on Raspberry Pi, RMA the kit and tell their friends of the negative experience.

I'm good with waiting until it is fixed before I do the review Laureen, the rest of the kit works as expected.

How about extending the deadline of the challenge until the noobs camera install works out of the box? I could use a webcam to capture Santa but that skips around the whole point of the contest, namely introducing people to the NoIR camera module and the PiFace Control and Display board.

I'm kind of in the same boat as Greg, where I need to do the video capture in order to complete the challenge.

Luckily I have been able to order the NOIR camera and its in my hands.

I'm desperate to do what I said in the application.

Its Friday Dec 20th here in NZ and its so unlikely that the parcel will arrive in time, given all the other freight around Xmas.

I'm more than happy to do the rest of the review regarding the case and Pi Face Control, but will be squeezed as we are away until Jan 3rd as well.

Can we partly complete the review and then include the rest.?

                                                      Thanks

Since you are obviously capable of programming the SDcard your self would it just be better to reprogram the card with a release of Raspian rather than the Noobs if this will get you going. It's all very odd as by default the Noobs installs Rasbian anyway ...grr

I am excited to get my package, but as of this morning it has not arrived. Figured it would have since I live close to Chicago and I am guessing that is where it shipped from. Was there to be a case for the camera in the packaging?  If not I will start building one something to function as such.

But I will not let that stop me from starting to play.  I have another RPi here and a normal RPi camera hooked up and working.  Also I am ordered and received a hc-sr501 IR motion sensor and simple array of IR LED's intended to be a replacement for security camera.  Also I have 25 high output IR LED's coming from ebay.  I have the hc-sr501 hooked up to my RPi and have it turning on/off and LED on rising and falling edges from the PIR output.  That is working good, doing some more reading about the sensor itself.

From reading this thread already, I will start by trying the NOOBs install and the NoIR camera and if that does not work, the normal camera. If they do not work, move on to the Raspbain install without NOOBs. Would be neat if someone tried out a different OS for some different reviews.

                                                                  • 31. Re: PiNoir & Santa Catcher Challenge Support

we'll extend the challenge by a week to January 20th given that we want to give everyone the best possible chance”

                                                                    Now,

IF we delay further in our shipment releasing to you, I will again be extending our time frames for date project is due. I understand these delays create a uncomfortable situation and I cannot apologize enough..and believe me when I tell you I am sorry and incredibly disappointed as I read the entries and am so excited to see what you all can create- as I have none of the ability myself....

I know it is a massive disappoinment for those among us that are stuck in the delay but I know that the items exist and will arrive as soon as humanly possible.

In the meantime, take the time to enjoy the run up to Christmas and have a happy holiday one and all.

I still wonder if its possible for these Road Tests to use the local element14 store to actually ship from.

In most cases they have stocks, and for the NZ supply, are overnight from Australia.

I'm lucky that I had a NOIR camera and I ordered overnight a Pi Face Control, so apart from the case I have the parts to do the capture I need.

Others might not be so lucky, so might need to rethink their subject.

Just a heads up: If you look at the top panel of the Raspberry Pi case just above the cutout for the RJ45 network cable connector on the inside there is a groove.

Use a sharp knife and push through this, it looks like it is designed for the Pi Camera cable. Once you have made the initial hole use the knife from the other side and neaten the cut.

Also, there is a gap on the bottom board of the PiFace Control and Display that the ribbon cable goes through to prevent fouling.

I have just got to figure out how to mount the camera securely, trusting the camera to a piece of ribbon cable is definitely not something I want to do long term.

I am thinking of a piece of board with the case bolted to it and the camera case mounted to the board.

For camera mounting and protecting I have a quick solution that will work for the Road test. Take a rectangle cardboard, but out a hole a bit larger than the lens.  Fold the cardboard over the camera and ribbon and then use the springy paper clamp to hold it shut, sandwiching the camera in the middle.  Then you can use another spring clamp to clamp the cardboard to a CD Spindle and put your RPi case on the base.  Not the best, but quick and dirty for the road test.

                                                                              • 38. Re: PiNoir & Santa Catcher Challenge Support

                                                                                https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi-camera/pibow-raspberry-pi-camera-mount

Comes with some 2mm ? plastic fasteners to hold the camera to the mount.

Not 100% perfect, as it does put pressure on the pcb, and the only plastic washers I had were too thick.

The tripod mount is also a bit on the small side, unless you have a spacer.

However for its price it was good value.

While I was there I also set the other stuff for Pifacecad as well.

Reboot the Pi and run sudo raspi-config, just to be sure the setting took.

It is really quite simple - nothing much apart from a mcp23s17 16 bit GPIO port expander, the switches on port A and the LCD on port B.

Does anyone have a good solution for fixing that problem?  The other problem would be how to access these pins and still have room in the case.  Even if they would have used a header with a bit longer legs to get.

But thanks for the reference, as I was hoping to be able to modify the default setting on power up.

I don't suppose that has managed to get trapped and travelled into the plug, during the installation.

I've also seen it where the locking part hasn't been properly pushed home and only some pins make contact.

When installed, it should look like this (note this is a normal camera, not the black NOIR version fitted to a ModelA)

You can see how much cable is inserted at the camera end, which is the same style plug as the board end.

(click on the image to enlarge)

I know I am grasping at straws but I have tried several power supplies up to and including 5 volts, 2 amps (mobile phone chargers from Apple, Samsung etc).

The Class 10 is designed to be fast, but they tend to allow only one communications to one file.

Buried in the fine print there are many different electrical signalling modes ranging from 1bit SPI mode at 3.3v and 25MHz to 208MHz @ 1.8v and on to 0.4v modes @ 52MHz and theoretical 312MB/s transfer with UHS-II. Even the basic 'Default Speed' (one step up from SPI mode) can theoretically transfer at 12.5MB/s so could be a 'Class 10'.  The issues start to happen when you work out the intersection of supported modes for both the particular card and the controller. The Pi is hard-wired to only allow 3.3v, so some modes become unavailable (both the driver and the Pi's SD controller can support more, it's the stuff external to the SoC that's lacking).

I've used 'Class 10' cards in the Pi and in several other SBC's with no problems, the main advantage being that they can often give you better performance than a cheap class4 as, other concerns aside, the actual flash part of the card is faster.  One problem I did notice with a recent update to the Pi firmware/kernel (for fixes to the camera stuff) was that a couple of my class 6 cards became un-bootable. The class 10 card that was problematic in the early days works fine with the update though!

I have gotten my USB Wi-Pi working, seems using a good power supply that provides more than 850mA is really a good thing.  Works fine for the Pi, but the Wi-Pi would not find my AP.  Then got my PiFace CAD working and a little playing with Python and all is good.

I did miss someone who was checking their present ...funny how they admit it before the video evidence is presented.

Have you tried playing with the filter sheet at all?

Although having said that, using a cron job/script for each photo would allow a trigger to be sent to the GPIO to control a flash, IR source or a motor.

The same could then trigger the photo/video based on the GPIO input, which will be handy for my next article/project.

The PiFace Control does make it very easy, since you can just set it and walk away without needing to login and do what you need.

The scripts are there, and seem easy enough to tweak ...its just the wrong time at the moment.

I did see some other timelapse software around, so some downloading and mixing might be the go.

Yes the colours will be funny, and I did realise that before setting it off on the unwrapping timelapse. We decided we can always make it B&W so it wasn't an issue.

I'll probably have a play with the scripts, and see if I can tweak it and do something on New Years eve, (depending on where we end up this year).

I know jamesh has done quite a bit on the inner workings.

I've done several months worth of timelapse stuff using the built-in timelapse mode in raspistill.  Two problems:

                                                                                                                                                              1. exposure modes, iso settings etc seem to be fixed when you start raspistill, so if you start it in daylight the settings don't work so well at night.

                                                                                                                                                              2. if you set a 5 second timeout you got 5 seconds between captures, the time required for the capture wasn't taken into account so the actual interval could be more like 6 seconds. This one may have been fixed in more recent versions of raspistill.

I have working ffmpeg commands to convert a group of stills into h264 encoded mp4 if you want them. Probably too slow to run on the Pi and the weird debian fork of ffmpeg, avconv, omits all of the controversial codecs like h264 anyway.

Someone (it might have been Selsinork) was having issues with it crashing on video, so it could have been fixed. Yes, with early versions of raspivid I had problems with random crashes. There's a lot of work been done by jamesh and others since then, so that may have been fixed. I've not tried raspivid in quite a while, so I can't say for sure if it has.

Limited testing so fas shows the v4l2 driver does work, but it obviously still has some issues to be worked out. Reading the RPF thread again this morning and it seems they've added a possibly working MJPEG mode as well.  More choices are good, more possibilities to get to the result you want!

I would expect the ISO and any effects to stay the same, but the changing light condition is going to be a problem.

If the metering dropped the exposure time down, you can also start getting blurry images, so any timelapse will be an issue.

Obviously you have much more experience using these tools, and the limited 5MP (I tend to use 24MP in raw form ...so just a bit more room to play).

The more I think about it, the more I'm liking the script to take a single image, which allows outputting to the GPIO, etc.

You can still use the Piface cad and snap-camera to do the setup, but then have it perform a single image at a time.

If the metering dropped the exposure time down, you can also start getting blurry images, so any timelapse will be an issue.

For me the problem was a lack of control. Even my cheapy cannon point & click can be put into manual mode where you can compensate for the software making stupid decisions. You can't do that with the Pi camera so you have to resort to changing a setting that you do have control over in the hope of influencing the software to change ones that you don't.

If you set the camera to full auto mode and use a script to call raspistill every 5 seconds, you'll get very different results from using the built in timelapse mode. Simply because the camera will completely re-evaluate it's choices on every run instead on once at the start.

If you read the RPF forums, there's various methods proposed for dealing with this for timelapse. Some people are reading the exif data from the previous image and using it to adjust the settings for the next invocation of raspistill. Others are processing the full image to determine their own light levels then using that result to adjust the camera settings.

I had intended to use a generic ambient light sensor, but ran into a problem where it was working ok with flourescent light, but not incandescent. I need to make some PCB's to try out some of the other sensors and just haven't got round to that yet.

Havent tried it myself yet, but as it's winter here there's ample opportunity for night time photos

Christian found the missing cameras and I know the cases were having problems in customs.  Like you said, we can start playing what what we have now and reading up on how things work.

Okay, it has been too quiet around here.  Got my Pi NoIR camera today and decided to start playing.  Well, plugged it in and started it up and had the same problems others were having that it would not work.  Saying the camera was not installed.  Double checked everything, enabled, rebooted, seated on both ends of the ribbon cable, etc.  No luck.  Then I check the small ribbon connector at the top of the lens and found that if I pushed it in, it would pop and I am guess re-seat.  Tested it and it worked, then I put it back in the case and it did not work.  Seems that camera housing/case pops that little sucker off.

Seem to be just your luck though, I have several cameras and haven't had any problems.

I don't like the case much though. I got the white version a few months back and don't think the quality is at all good. One of the problems is getting the camera board to sit in the slots in the sides fully. It's a bit hard to tell from your photo, but I wonder if the camera board isn't seated fully ?  If the camera board sits too high then maybe something catches the connector when you close the case. Or I'd not be surprised if the force needed isn't causing the fairly thin PCB to flex and that's causing the connector to pop out.

The only easy way of doing it with a moulded case would be to have half the connector on the bottom of the case and the top part of the connector apertures on the Top moulding so join was along the line of all the connectors so you can just pop the board in and then bolt it down.

BTW notice that all these cases are probably a standard size with the apertures milled out so even here they didn't fancy making a tool to do the moulding in one piece!!

After the road test, this will go in a different enclosure and be located outside.  I wanted to let people to know what to look for if they are having the same problem.

Having the camera inside the ~3mm thick clear lid has it's problems, you get distortions and reflections.  The last photo in that album shows the latest incarnation which has a sheet of OHP transparency sandwiched between the case and the plate on the front. Plenty of silicone

Shipment came in the mail today, I too have outside project ideas, I wrote 2 people who corresponded about the shipment to let them know my Pi/LCD control case was also not included in the shipment.  Hopefully I can get one shipped to me.  Otherwise, this afternoon I was able to fire up the Pi, configure it with Rasbian via noobs greeting, configure to boot to desktop, enable WIFI (using WPA2), enable the camera, take a few stills and a quick vid to reflect that it is working as well as display the default LCD output of the IP as well as the CPU temp etc...  so far so good!  I have temp'd in an enclosure to get things going, also the camera housing DID arrive in the box, so all I'm missing I believe is the Pi/LCD Control Carbon Fiber case!!   Excited to get that for the review.  In the mean time, I have confirmed that it boots headless, SSH enabled and now I can get to work on it.  I am thinking cron jobs, rsync's, somthing, to a remote host on my network, then display the stills or the vid through another means, in an attempt to off load some of the work that the Pi has to deal with.  I saw a post that there is a utility that the camera is used with that negates the need for the cron style jobs.  Going to go back through the documentation and see what I can do with it.  I think I need a line item list of some links to:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                1) LCD / Control docs that are specific to button purposing and relevant configuration

                                                                                                                                                                                                                2) Camera control, automation, GUI adjustments for brightness, *color, sharpness etc...   just for example of tweaking those settings on the fly, to adjust it as a first stab in that environment (thinking command line like alsamixer sliders)

                                                                                                                                                                                                                3) Need to review what is available for the sensor capabilities with the I/O pins, maybe adding a few IR emitters to add *light, for snapping some non light photos  etc...

                                                                                                                                                                                                                4) more?

We used an over-sized piece of acrylic with countersunk screws.

This was then silicon'ed onto the inside of metal front panel with the screw threads sticking out.

It worked very well with zero failures, and the silicon seemed to hold the screws very well.

I think for this a 3mm thick piece with a notch for the camera, and a 2mm that had a little more clearance might work.

You can use a piece of mylar for the last tenths of a millimeter, which could be cut larger and folded to provide protection to the back if the user desired.

If you can't /didn't want to use 2mm screws, you could always make it wider with a third piece on the top that did the holding, and use 3mm screws.

If you made the first piece longer then its easy to add a right angle bracket for a tripod or vertical mount.

Since I'd be laser cutting it I would need to use  3mm Acrylic not least because that's all I've got at the moment

I'm essentially using two 3mm bits of ABS to space mine.  For the clear lid version, I glued some pieces into the case, mounted the camera to a second, then bolted them together.  The current case uses the case itself as one of the 3mm parts with the clear sheet on the outside. I suspect the difference from 5.2mm to 6mm makes no difference and may possibly be taken up by the sticky pad holding the camera to the PCB anyway.

I too received my final box today, the Carbon Fiber Pi+CAD enclosure, was going to snap some pics of my progress however, now I've run into a small hiccup I think.  It possibly is my fault but want to get a few other opinions before I go all hacker on it.  Before installing said Pi+CAD in the enclosure, i *thought things were grooving nicely, So a quick a quick catch up, I found some documentation that had me setup the Pi with Apache + some additional python scripts mix in a little php and voila, had on-demand snapshots, with a web browser that would display the newly snapped pic.  Configured that last night (late), then messed with that better part of the morning and just afternoon.  Then turned my attention to the snap-camera.  Found the article and documentation (forums stuff too about experience), got that up and configured and played a little with it this evening.    (reboot to enable and set newly installed snap-camera), seemed to be fine, left it alone for a few hours come back now that a cute little brown package arrives, unwrap the new CF-enclosure, ssh --  shutdown the Pi cleanly, put it all back together and power up the new good looking contraption and the Display text is now all garbled when it looks like it should be loading/starting up the snap-camera LCD screen txt.  Thought that was strange,  ssh - cleanly shutdown again, pull enclosure apart carefully and slowly to make sure nothing was disconnected or wonky, re-assemble, same thing.  Garbled txt when it finally is booted up.  SO, like any good *nix person, ssh -- restart the snap-camera service, display *rights itself, think it is fixed, only to have the characters start to *corrupt themselves after pushing the once working buttons.  I think this is a script/python level thing but this is where I default to everyone else for assistance.  I am not a programmer.  I can follow along and traceback things, but .....  SO, I'm leaning toward it's not a hardware issue, but python or a conflicting service or script.   About to disassemble the Pi, and run it again outside the enclosure jic.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Thoughts anyone/everyone?

That night I fiddled a bit longer and before I read your post (just now) I had the same thought.  During initial setup and test of the LCD, I went through the steps to enable the sysinfo.py script.  Simply removing it from defaults fixed after I stopped the 'service'.   Thanks for the reply,  Over the years I've been brain washed to use the ps axf, showing tree/child processes.  I knew it was a py script so it was easy to identify.

everything fits in quite well, it is even possible to lead the camera flat cable next to the display, but I'm thinking of cutting a small slit to better line up the cable.

In the box there was also a small perspex block for showing the act and pwr led signals.

I think this block needs to be glued into the case, because it does not snap from its own.

This is not what I want, since I suspect that after that it is very difficult, or even impossible to remove the raspberry pi from the case.

If you look at the top half of the case from the inside you will see both slots.

One of the things I would suggest for that case is that the size and width be changed to show the network LEDs as well as the power and drive activity, and making the light pipe out of 5 separate slices of plastic with an opaque slice between each slice so it shows the individual LEDs.

Increasing the size of the holes from a pinprick would not go amiss too.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              • 127. These us I2C, so I thought that would be interesting for the project. Not that Santa cares about the temperature of the room, but because this device should be in an enclosure and knowing the temperature of that enclosure could trigger some actions or alerting.  Send me a SMS message via Twilio, turn on a fan, turn on a heater, flash a red LED, or most likely a combination of all three.

That brings up my problem.  I have the I2C bus working on two Rev 2 RPi's.  Both can see the TMP102 that they have hooked up to them.  Now the one for the Santa project works, but then after a while dropped out of the bus.  Then every now and then it comes back.  The other RPi and TMP102 works all the time and never has had a problem. I was hoping someone would say, yeah, had that, look at ... kind of moment right now.

If not, I will swap the two TMP102 and see if the problem follows the sensor or RPi.  Then if it keeps up on the Santa Pi, I will remove the camera, PiFaceCAD, and breadboard to test those items and add them back in if it works. If it works with all them removed and changed out, then I am going to guess there is something wrong with my I2C bus on this RPi.
