Do you think that Beryllium Copper is likely to be included as a hazardous substance in the RoHS recast as was put forward by the OKO institute initially?
Really good question, it has gone quiet.
I doubt it will be in the group of substances for priority assessment under the recast.
As RoHS substance methodology moves closer to REACH I have checked
the European Chemicals Agency website and Beryllium Copper is not, currently, on a list of potential
SVHCs or under the register of intentions.
I donot think it will be included but I am going to do some checking for you.
This morning I have received the official document from the UK Government outlining the
103 proposed amendments to the RoHS recast.
A first reading agreement later this year is very possible although not a certainty.
However, I can inform you that "Beryllium and its compounds" sits in the list of the 37
substances that will be considered for priority assessment with a potential restriction in mind.
Hope this helps
Many Thanks for the reply Gary. Not the news i wanted to hear, but i'm glad to hear it earlier rather than later!!
Is this document outlining the 103 proposed ammendments, available to the general public? Is there a link?
I also have been asked on several occasions regarding if Halogens and/or Beryllium will be banned. The ramifications of banning PVC are also not pleasant for the supply chain.
Thank you for your question.
I have posted the 103 amendments under "Latest News" on element14
but attach below for your reference.
In respect of the substances you mention they fall under amendment 87
which is the list of 37 substances that are proposed for priority
assessment with a view of a possible restriction.
I hope this help.
The Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) gave an update
on the proposed RoHS (and WEEE) recast in London on August 3rd.
