Is there a semi-easy way to make (rf?) wireless devices (ie: phenom ps3 game controller, misc wireless keyboard with built in trackpad(s)  with missing usb receiver dongles work with a generic receiver or say a logitech "unifying" usb dongle?

I keep finding awesome wireless devices at thrift stores / garage sales that usually are missing the usb receiver(s) needed to make them work. I know logitech solved this problem with their awesome tiny usb unifying dongle. But more specifically I found a wireless ps3 game controller made by dreamgear called the Phenom for under 5 bucks! . I realize I could contact the company and purchase a replacement receiver  but I am curious as to how hard would it be to hack a different usb receiver to talk to my game controller etc??? I also see many wireless keyboard(s) or keyboard mouse combos missing their little receivers as well. I am not talking about bluetooth ones as those are already easy enough to connect using the computers bluetooth system...
