Louis Wong is Sales General Manager at element14 for Greater China region. Based in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, he reports to Weidi Zhu, Business President of element14 in APAC, and is responsible for business strategy, operations and sales & marketing programs for element14 in the Greater China Region.

Louis has over 20 years of sales and marketing experience in the electronics component industry. He joined element14 in 2013 as Sales Manager and has helped propel element14 to new heights during his tenure. Over the past 6 years, he has helped expand element14’s customer base and collaborated with the marketing team to introduce localised services, establish close relationships with suppliers, and launch various marketing campaigns to boost sales in the region.

Louis began his career as a design engineer with Pagemate Ltd and Murata HK. Prior to joining element14, he also served as Senior Sales and Marketing Manager of Arrow Asia Pacific. Louis has a Bachelor of Electronic Engineering (BEng Hons Degree) from City University of Hong Kong.

element14 have helped a group of Mechanical Engineering students from the National University of Singapore to win the Championship Prize for “Unconventional Design” at the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition - netting a cash prize of $3,500 for the NUS Department of Mechanical Engineering.

element14 provided essential components and tools for the team to develop a lightweight Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) to compete in the Singapore Competition. This included soldering equipment, cutting devices and components from brands such as MultiComp, Duratool and Tenma. The completed ‘Mechfly’ weighed in at just 29 grams and utilized a flapping wing mechanism to fly with enough control and stability to successfully complete a mission scenario demonstration which included navigating several obstacles, collecting a spilled chemical sample using an attached cotton bud and releasing a neutralizing agent using a mounted needle and some balloons.

The team is now planning to conduct a two day workshop at the Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with the NUS Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) Team, where they hope to raise further interest in flight vehicles among NUS Engineers. They will also continue to work on improving the performance of the Mechfly by employing further weight-reducing techniques and attempting to reduce the size of the platform.

Premier Farnell, The Development Distributor, is now shipping the Infineon 24V Protected Switch Shield and the Low-Side Switch Shield both for Arduino.

The 24V Protected Switch Shield is a power switch evaluation board compatible with Arduino microcontroller boards and Infineon’s XMC™ microcontroller kits using the Arduino form factor. It provides fast and inexpensive prototyping of 24V load driving, making it ideal for use in applications such as truck bulbs, car bulbs, valves, motors, relays, capacitors, and LEDs.

The shield is equipped with three PROtected high-side power MOSFETs out of the PROFET™+ 24V family, offering five 24 V channels in total. The power switches are controlled via the INx (input) pins. The PROFET™+ 24V devices also provide a sense current at the IS pin, which can be enabled via the DEN (Diagnosis ENable) pin. For the two channel devices the sensed channel is selected via the DSEL (Diagnosis SELect) pin. For each device the sense signal (IS) is connected to an own ADC channel of the microcontroller.

Infineon’s PROFET™+ 24V protected high-side switches drive resistive, capacitive and inductive loads with either a PWM of up to 400Hz or DC. It includes a driver circuit with logic level inputs, as well as load diagnosis with current sense capability and over temperature shut down with latch behaviour providing protection against over temperature, over current and ESD. This shield can handle 8 ~ 36V nominal input voltage (max. 5 ~ 48V) and a nominal current up to 5A per channel restricted due to PCB (nominal current: 7 A).

The Low-Side Switch Shield from Infineon consists of three BTF3050TE low-side switches of the HITFET™+ family providing three independent power channels that can be controlled via the input pins. The shield is compatible with microcontroller boards using the Arduino form factor and supports fast and easy prototyping of applications with BTF3050TE. With a nominal load current of 3A the BTF3050TE is able to drive resistive, inductive and capacitive loads. Furthermore the smart low-side switch provides diagnosis and protection features against items such as over temperature shut down with auto restart behaviour and double current limitation for inrush current. It also includes a latched and stable fault signal which is independent of the input pin. The Low-Side Switch Shield has a driver circuit with logic level inputs and can be driven with PWM up to 14 kHz (10% duty cycle) and with a 50 mΩ single channel switch, nominal battery voltage range from 8 ~ 18V and a nominal load current of 3A (typ.) DC this switch provides a fast and inexpensive way of prototyping for a wide range of applications.

• Turnkey IO-Link Sensor Transmitter: As the front-end design for RTD with IO-Link compliant sensor transmitter, it contains a totally validated IO-Link PHY and stack and also contains a form factor of 6 mm width (compatible with a standard M12 connector). With all three components, this design aims to jump-start IO-Link devices developments.

• Isolated Loop Powered Thermocouple Transmitter: a system solution providing precision K-type thermocouple measurements for 4 to 20-mA isolated current-loop applications. This design is intended as an evaluation module for users to fast prototype and develop end-products for process-control and factory-automation.

• Reference Design for Reinforced Isolation Three-Phase Inverter: This design provides a reference solution for a three phase inverter rated up to 10 kW, designed using reinforced isolated dual IGBT gate driver, 250kHz reinforced isolated amplifier, and MCU TMS320F28027. The inverter is designed to have protection against overload, short circuit, ground fault, DC bus undervoltage and overvoltage, and IGBT module over temperature.

• EMC Compliant Single-Chip Resolver-to-Digital Converter (RDC) Reference Design: This design provides a solution for EMC-compliant resolver-to-digital converter (RDC) with a single-chip PGA411-Q1 with a 12-bit angle resolution. The included PGA411-Q1's integrated boost converter and exciter amplifier can reduce system cost and board space compared to traditional RDC solutions.

• 48V 3-Phase Inverter Reference Design: This design can realize a 48V/10A 3-phase GaN inverter with precision in-line shunt-based phase current sensing for accurate control of precision drives such as servo drives. It also offers a TI BoosterPack compatible interface to connect to a C2000 MCU LaunchPad™ development kit for easy performance evaluation.
